Essential Information

Beginning and advanced cooking classes are available through a variety formats in the state of Maryland. Students could choose to take standalone non-credit cooking classes. They might also enroll in 2-year colleges in order to pursue certificate and associate's degree degrees in Maryland. These programs may include practicum experiences or internships that allow students to build hands-on cooking experience. Allegany College of Maryland

Cumberland-based Allegany College of Maryland offers several 10-credit programs that award letters of recognition and may be used towards the school's associate's degree program. The associate's degree requires 69 credits with a summer session and includes classes in hospitality management, food service sanitation, food preparation, baking, garde manger and beverage management, in addition to general education requirements. Culinary students practice their skills in the restaurant in the Gateway Center, in downtown Cumberland. Tuition in culinary programs may vary, depending on state funding, and a portion of the tuition charged out-of-county students may be reimbursed.

Anne Arundel Community College

Arnold's Anne Arundel Community College makes non-credit cooking classes available, which might include options such as international cooking, seafood preparation, regional cooking and healthy eating. A wide variety of certificate programs are offered in areas such as baking/pastry arts, culinary arts, event planning/catering and restaurant cooking skills. This school also offers 3 associate's degree programs with cooking classes, in both culinary arts and management. Degree program students fulfill a practicum for degree completion. Chesapeake College

Situated in Wye Mills, this college offers cooking classes through its continuing education and workforce training in areas such as culinary fundamentals, food preparation and safe food handling techniques. Also available are a 9-credit letter of recognition program in food service management, a 28-credit certificate program in food service management, a 31-credit certificate program in hotel/resort management and a 61-credit associate's degree program in hotel/restaurant management.
