Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick offers a Culinary Arts Assistant Certificate program for students interested in careers in the food industry. The 16 credits needed for the program are fulfilled by taking five courses: fundamentals of food sanitation and safety, fundamentals of restaurant operation, fundamentals of food production I and II and an office administration co-op. In these courses, students learn the basics of sanitary food storage, culinary management and cooking technique. Students are also required to work 10 to 15 hours a week in a professional environment to further hone their skills. The certificate can typically be completed in one semester.

Johnson & Wales University - Providence

Located in the state capital of Providence, Johnson & Wales University (JWU) is a private university. Individuals looking for cooking classes in Rhode Island can enroll in an associate's degree program for baking & pastry arts or culinary arts through JWU's College of Culinary Arts. Students in the baking and pastry arts program are exposed to baking and pastry fundamentals as they practice baking artisan breads, decorating wedding cakes and making plated desserts. Graduates of this program can pursue entry-level careers as pastry chefs, catering managers, bakeshop managers. An individual who wants to be a chef at fine dining venues can choose to work towards the associate's degree in culinary arts. Students in this track take classes in European cuisine, meat cutting, nutrition, beverage service and sanitation. The curriculum includes hands-on opportunities for students in a JWU-owned operation or one of its partner facilities.

Johnson & Wales also offers bachelor's programs in baking and pastry arts and food service management and in culinary arts and food service management. Both programs build upon their respective associate's degree programs. Because most courses at Johnson & Wales are four and a half credit hours instead of the more traditional three hours, the bachelor's degrees require roughly 192 credit hours for completion. These degree programs train students in hospitality management and marketing in addition to honing their cooking skills.
