Cosmetology Instructor Training Programs and Requirements
Cosmetology instructors educate students about the treatment of hair, skin and nails and explain how to take safety precautions. In addition to teaching students about the field of cosmetology, instructors also prepare students for the state licensing examination for cosmetologists. Instructors must hold a valid cosmetology license and complete a cosmetology instructor training program before applying for state licensure.
Training Requirements and Recommendations
A high school diploma and three years of full-time salon experience as a licensed cosmetologist generally meets the minimum qualifications to become a cosmetology instructor; however, state requirements vary. Other requirements for being a cosmetology instructor include expert knowledge of hair coloring, styling and straightening methods, make-up application and nail care. Leadership skills, excellent oral and written communications, customer service and familiarity with specific beauty products are requested by some employers.
Experienced cosmetologists with salon management experience may choose to teach as they advance in their cosmetology career. Certificate programs for aspiring instructors are available.
Certificate of Completion
Coursework in the cosmetology instructor training program covers lesson planning, teaching techniques, student evaluations and the operation of audio-video equipment. Graduates of certificate programs, which are offered by technical colleges and cosmetology schools, know how to manage a classroom and demonstrate beauty services. They can also implement a curriculum that adheres to state cosmetology laws.
Aspiring cosmetology instructors need to have expertise in all areas of cosmetology in order to teach. They draw on their years of experience as cosmetologists when teaching students beauty treatments, such as manicures, pedicures, hair cutting, waxing and makeup application. If the amount of experience in a specific specialty area does not meet program standards, additional training is usually required. Aspiring instructors complete this training before enrolling in the instructor certificate program.
Licenses and Certifications
To be eligible for state licensing, cosmetology instructors need to have maintained a passing grade in each course and successfully completed the training program. In addition to passing a written and practical examination, students should submit a copy of their current cosmetology license, a completed state application and a fee to their state's board of regulation and licensing. State requirements also vary on the number of continuing education hours required to recertify.
Workshops and Seminars
Cosmetology instructors may find additional information about current trends in their industry by attending seminars, demonstration sessions and workshops, which are often offered through the local cosmetology association or community college. The topics of these seminars cover various aspects of cosmetology.
