Essential Information

Although there are a few universities in India, Australia and the United Kingdom that offer graduate diploma programs in biotechnology, there are no diploma programs in the United States. However, certificate programs in biotechnology often have a similar structure and length to diploma programs. A certificate program in biotechnology provides students with an extra level of education in the field.

The program is well-suited for students who are either working towards a bachelor's degree or who have already completed a bachelor's degree program and want to learn more about biotechnology. Certificate programs are often more abbreviated than degree programs and consist of 7-15 credit hours. A certificate program in biotechnology is not to be confused with entry-level biology programs; certificate programs usually include advanced courses that build upon a related degree program.

Education Prerequisites

Students must either be college graduates or in the process of earning a bachelor's degree before enrolling in a biotechnology certificate program. Some undergraduate majors that are related to the certificate program include biology, chemistry and environmental science. Most certificate programs in the field require students to have completed certain undergraduate courses, such as calculus, organic chemistry and general chemistry.

Program Coursework

Biotechnology certificate courses are at an advanced level and focus heavily on laboratory experience. Coursework includes:

  • Biotechnology laboratory
  • Molecular biology laboratory
  • Microbiology
  • Human anatomy laboratory
  • Physiology laboratory
  • Environmental toxicology laboratory

Popular Career Options

A certificate in biotechnology, when combined with a regular undergraduate degree in a scientific field, can prepare individuals for careers in clinical research, medical research and academic research. Other career options include:

  • Clinical laboratory technician
  • Crime scene technician
  • Biological supplies manufacturer
  • Environmental technician
  • Food safety technician
  • Infectious disease researcher
  • Biological technician
  • Pharmaceutical research technician

Job Outlook and Salary Information

While certificate holders might obtain several positions depending on their previous education, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics listed a 14% employment growth for biological technicians from 2010-2020. The mean annual salary for these workers was $42,600 in May 2012.
