Food science combines engineering, science and math to deal with processing, preserving and storing food. Food scientists examine the ingredients and properties in food so it's properly preserved, processed, packaged, distributed and stored. They consider ways to improve food products and create new processing and storing techniques.

Education Information

Through associate's degree programs in food science, participants study food sanitation, food processing, quality assurance, nutrition and the basics of food science. At the bachelor's degree level, learners take general science courses, such as chemistry and biology, in addition to food science classes, such as food microbiology, food engineering, food safety, toxicology and food chemistry.
