Molecular toxicology involves studying biophysics and biochemistry heavily as well as applying the knowledge in laboratory and environmental settings. Programs in the field of molecular toxicology study the effects of chemicals on living microscopic organisms. This form of toxicology examines both naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals. Also considered are the effects of genetic, physiologic and environmental factors on organisms.

Education Information

Molecular toxicology is often introduced during undergraduate biochemistry and biology courses. While molecular toxicology is available as an undergraduate major, it is most often offered through graduate-level programs. These 2-year programs cover toxicology, molecular biology and research methods. Students will spend a significant amount of time independently learning in toxicology laboratories. Molecular toxicology students must also develop strong foundations in the core sciences, including physics, biology and chemistry.
