If you have a facility for mathematics, economics and sales, you may want to consider a career as an insurance agent or adjustor. Such skills are highly valued in the insurance industry and can lead to several career opportunities with the right training.

Inside Insurance

While insurance can apply to many areas, some major categories include life, health, property, home and auto insurance. Sales agent, broker, appraiser, adjuster, coder and billing agent are just a few examples of the careers that exist in the insurance industry. Careers in insurance typically involve working for insurance agencies, carriers and brokerage firms, although there are some insurance occupations in which people essentially work for themselves.

The work of insurance agents includes making sure that the proper forms have been created, filed and managed by document specialists or filing analysts. Underwriting departments need support personnel, raters, marketing specialists and underwriters, while claims departments require the services of investigators, examiners and adjusters who specialize in the recovery of claims as well as the identification of fraudulent claims. The insurance industry also employs computer programmers with insurance training to develop insurance software that is able to calculate risks and rates.
