Inside Optometry

Optometry is a career field that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and correction of vision problems. Optometrists should not be confused with ophthalmologists or opticians, whose responsibilities and expertise differ. Optometrists prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses. They also test for common vision diseases such as glaucoma, but do not perform eye surgery or treat eye injury. However, opticians fit and adjust eyeglasses but do not prescribe them, and ophthalmologists are medical doctors specializing in eye diseases and ocular surgery.
