Game Technician Education Requirements

A game technician's job is to service and maintain video game consoles, from traditional arcade games to platform-based games on systems such as Sony Playstation 4, Nintendo's Wii U or Microsoft's Xbox One. Often, game technicians work in an arcade, though some who specialize in a particular system may work for independent companies repairing game consoles. The basic education required for a game technician is a high school diploma or GED; many employers prefer previous experience in electronics repair as well. Many arcades hire based on experience and platform or game familiarity.

Practical knowledge and experience in knowing how to take apart and fix a game or console can be all that's necessary in getting a job. Some employers, however, require employees have previous certification in electronics or appliance repair. Others allow them to apply for certification once their on-the-job training is completed. A few organizations offer training specifically in video game repair. If anything beyond on-the-job training is desired, game technicians often take courses in electronics. Because game technicians often deal directly with customers, some employers require they undergo customer service training.

Advanced Education Opportunities

A game technician is, essentially, an electronics technician who has specialized in the repair and maintenance of video game platforms. For that reason, the same avenues of advancement open to electronics technicians are available for game technicians. Electronics technician classes, degrees and certifications are available, from one-time classes to full courses of study in electronics at the associate's and bachelor's degree levels.

These degree programs offer instruction in areas such as alternating current, direct current, solid state circuitry, integrated circuits, digital electronics, safety procedures, college-level mathematics, test equipment and game software.

The more that a game technician can specialize in certain areas, the more desirable they will be to employers. Ultimately, though, becoming a game technician is all about understanding the construction and technology of gaming consoles.
