Career Requirements

Individuals interested in educational supervision, such as aspiring principals, department chairs or school superintendents, generally need to obtain a master's or doctoral degree in educational administration or leadership. Licensure is not needed for positions in postsecondary institutions or private schools, but most states require principals and superintendents working in the K-12 public school system to obtain licensure.

The requirements to become an administrator in the K-12 public school system in Connecticut include 50 school months of teaching, administrative or school managerial experience; a master's degree; completion of an additional graduate program for school administrators; passage of the Praxis I exam or a waiver; a course in special education; and other teaching and experiential requirements outlined by the state. After this, prospective administrators who pass an exam can receive the Connecticut Intermediate Administration and Supervision 092 endorsement.
