Las Vegas Schools Offering Electricity Programs

Schools around Las Vegas, Nevada, offer electricity training through programs in electrical engineering and electronics engineering technology. Some schools also offer programs in building technologies that offer studies designed to prepare students to become licensed electricians. Students can choose from programs that award a certificate or associate's, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree.

  • College of Southern Nevada offers certificates and 2-year degrees in electronics engineering as well as studies focusing on electrical installation and repair. The college is based in Las Vegas, about 18 miles southeast of the downtown area.
  • Electrical studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas focus primarily on electrical engineering technology at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The campus is located roughly five miles south of downtown Las Vegas.

College of Southern Nevada

With nearly 35,000 enrollees, the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) has the largest student population in the state. It offers certificates, associate's degrees and bachelor's degree programs in a wide range of disciplines. Course offerings include programming, telecommunications and electronic engineering.

Building Trades Certificate of Achievement - Electrician Emphasis

With lectures and lab work, this 30-credit program prepares students to sit for the Clark County Journeyman Electrician Examination. Topics include power tool usage, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, commercial and industrial wiring, blueprint analysis and specialty transformers.

Engineering Technology Certificate of Achievement- Electronic Emphasis

This 33-credit concentration addresses the tools and methods of electronic fabrication. It also teaches the mechanics of various testing equipment, such as oscilloscopes and the dynamics of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). A particular emphasis is placed on the components and operations of different solid-state devices, such as rectifier diodes and thyristors.

Certificate holders are qualified to become entry-level electricians. They can also continue their education and pursue an Associate of Applied Science in Electronic Engineering Technology.

Associate of Applied Science Degree in Building Trades - Electrician Emphasis

Program participants learn the job duties of journeyman electricians through 60 credits of hands-on training and classroom study. The curriculum covers blueprint interpretation, AC and DC dynamics, circuit breakers, electrical splices and the National Electrical Code (NEC), which is the U.S. standard for electrical wiring installation.

General education requirements include English, mathematics, science, social studies and humanities courses. Graduates of this program are qualified to take the Clark County Journeyman Electrician Examination.

Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology- Electronic Emphasis

Through lectures and hands-on application, pupils of this concentration are trained to become electronics technicians. The syllabus explores the mathematical applications that relate to digital circuitry, such as Boolean algebra and logic gates. Further topics examine electronic testing equipment, integrated circuits, microprocessors, power amplifiers and fabrication methods.

Classes covering management responsibilities and thermodynamics help to satisfy the general education requirements of this concentration. Associate degrees in electronic engineering technology are awarded upon the completion of 64 credits.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) awards undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees in over 200 disciplines, and it is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredits UNLV's electrical engineering program.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering - Electrical Engineering

The curriculum starts off with an overview of analog and digital circuits and the theories relating to their function. In addition to differences between AC and DC circuits, integrated circuit fabrication and logic families are also explored. Students study the functions of various solid-state mechanisms, such as transistors and semiconductors. General education requirements include literature, calculus, communication and humanities. This degree can be earned through 131 credits.

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering

Students of this program are exposed to the many facets of electrical engineering, including low noise circuits, operational amplifiers and electrical power distribution. The curriculum also deals with more advanced topics, such as wave propagation, hybrid microcircuits and digital signals. , This degree can be earned in 30 graduate credits with completion of a thesis.

Doctorate in Electrical Engineering

This program addresses advanced components of electrical engineering. Topics include single state and multistage networks, biosurveillance systems and voltage stability. In addition, the syllabus considers the mathematical and physical applications related to electricity.

Participants of this program who hold a master's degree in electrical engineering can earn a Ph.D. with the completion of 45 graduate credits. Those interested in teaching assistantships should contact UNLV's graduate coordinator. Graduates could explore careers in the aerospace, agricultural and health care industries.
