EMT Certification in Utah: Certificate Information and Options

Utah EMT Training Options
Students pursuing positions as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in Utah need to be certified by the state. Students can prepare for this certification through training programs offered at a variety of colleges and universities. Learn about the program levels, prerequisites and curricula for two universities' programs below. The table near the end of this article also includes additional information about these two schools.
- Utah Valley University is centrally located in Orem. This school offers certificate programs at the basic, intermediate and paramedic levels.
- Weber State University, in northern Utah, offers certificate programs at the basic, intermediate and paramedic levels, in addition to an associate's degree program in emergency care and rescue.
Utah Valley University
Utah Valley University (UVU) is a public university located in Orem, Utah. UVU offers more than 120 degree options, including associate's and bachelor's degree programs, as well as a variety of certificate programs. The university's Utah Fire and Rescue Academy offers several emergency medical services (EMS) programs, including EMT training at the basic, intermediate and paramedic levels.
This certificate program covers basic EMT topics, such as emergency childbirth, airway support, pediatric emergencies and automatic defibrillation. Students are required to complete nine credit hours. Graduates of this EMT program are prepared to sit for the EMT-Basic certification exam offered through the Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
This program is designed for students who hold current EMT-Basic certification or have at least six months of experience as a Utah EMT-Basic. The EMT-Intermediate certificate covers advanced topics, which include intravenous access, cardiac rhythm interpretation and medical skills. As of 2010, this certificate was offered only during the fall semester.
Certificate in Paramedic
Prior to enrolling in this paramedic program, students must hold EMT-Basic certification for a minimum of four months. They also need a current CPR certificate. The paramedic certificate includes 31 credit hours and can be completed in one year. Students cover paramedic topics, including a 3-credit hour lab. They gain six credit hours of work experience.
Weber State University
Weber State University (WSU) is located in Ogden, Utah, and it has one of the largest undergraduate enrollments in the state. WSU's Department of Emergency Care and Rescue is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). It offers paramedic degree and certificate options, as well as basic and intermediate EMT programs, for students pursuing EMT careers.
The 6-credit EMT-Basic certificate consists of two courses, including a lab. Students cover patient assessment, life support and treatment. Graduates of the program will have met the standards of the Utah Department of Health and the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Students in this certificate program typically hold EMT-Basic certification or have EMT experience. The program includes eight credit hours. It expands on the basic EMT topics and covers advanced life support techniques used with injured and sick patients.
Emergency Care and Rescue Institutional Certificate (Paramedic)
This certificate program is designed for students pursuing EMT-Paramedic careers. The program consists of 36-66 paramedic credit hours in courses like medical terminology and clinical paramedics. Students may also complete a paramedic internship.
Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Emergency Care and Rescue
Students in this program are required to have EMT certification in Utah or with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). In addition to general education requirements for the A.A.S. degree, students also complete requirements in cardiac life support, paramedic practice and traumatic emergencies.
