There are very few schools in North Louisiana that offer classes or degree programs in EMT (emergency medical technician) training. However, a 2-year community college and a university feature relevant emergency medical technician and paramedic certificate and associate's degree programs.
The curricula include classroom studies in airway management and trauma patient treatment as well as clinical and laboratory experiences. The programs are designed to prepare graduates for EMT certification. Bossier Parish Community College
Located in Bossier City, this community college offers a certificate and associate's degree program for EMT training. The technical competency in EMT certificate requires eight credit hours and includes field and laboratory experiences. A high school diploma or equivalent is a prerequisite, and graduates are eligible for state and national EMT certification.
The associate's degree program can be completed in two years and requires courses in airway management, trauma patient treatment, medical terminology and patient assessment. Over 1,000 hours of field and clinical experiences are mandatory. A total of 68 credit hours must be completed to earn the degree and become eligible for entry-level paramedic positions.
Southern University at Shreveport
Located in Shreveport, this university offers a certificate for basic emergency medical technician training. This program includes training in basic life support skills, airway management, ambulance operations and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Graduates are eligible for national and state certification.
