List of Engine Machinist Courses
Basics of Automotive Engine Machining
This course is an introduction to the manufacturing equipment and processes used to fabricate engine parts. Instruction on use of machining tools, such as lathes, pedestal grinders, arbor presses, valve resurfacers and tool sharpeners is provided. By the conclusion of the course, students may begin machining cylinder heads for engines.
This course provides students with the theory of engine operations. During the course, students learn to take an engine apart and identify each component as they reassemble the engine. Methods for disassembly and reassembly are discussed. Most engine machinists programs require this course be taking during the first semester of study.
Cylinder head assembly techniques are taught in this course. Using specialized tools, such as torque wrenches and measuring equipment, students rebuild cylinder heads while learning techniques such as bolt removal and thread repair. Valve train machining for aluminum and cast iron cylinder heads is covered.
Lower Engine Machining
This engine machinist course focuses on constructing the lower engine of the automobile which contains the engine block also referred to as the cylinder block. Students increase their skill in rod reconditioning, cylinder boring and honing, piston to rod installations and fly wheel grinding.
This course should be completed near the end of an engine machinist education program. Students practice methods for assembling and testing engine parts. Sealing and adjusting parts to ensure proper fit is emphasized.
This advanced engine machinist course covers topics such as cam degreeing (ensuring valves open on the engine at the to the manufacturers specifications), cam configuration and cam shaft design. Instructors also discuss engine analysis and engine failure. At the conclusion of the course, students completely rebuild an engine.
