Programs at American River College

Part of the Los Rios Community College District, American River College (ARC) is a public school that offers certificate and associate degree programs aimed at preparing students for success in academics, while also preparing them for employment in their chosen careers. The technical education department at ARC offers various vehicle-related training programs, including automotive technology, automotive collision technology and diesel technology. ARC's automotive programs offer students flexible schedules, with courses offered in 5-week, 8-week or 16-week formats. The 5-week courses start three times each semester.

Diesel Technology Certificate of Completion

Offered at the Mather Transportation Center, the diesel technology program includes, among others, a course on diesel engine repair. This course teaches students how to safely, remove, disassemble, clean and reassemble diesel engines. Other topics covered include diesel brake systems, electrical systems and power trains. Upon completion of this program, students have the knowledge and abilities to perform general and preventative maintenance on diesel-operated vehicles.

ARC also offers programs specific to clean diesel technology and diesel maintenance. Students interested in earning a degree must complete the certificate program, general education courses and elective courses to meet the 60-unit requirement. Students completing these programs can obtain National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) certifications.

Programs at Cosumnes River College

Also part of the Los Rios Community College District, Cosumnes River College (CRC) is a college that offers certificate and associate degree programs in multiple areas of study. In addition to the small engine repair, and various other automotive programs, CRC offers an associate degree program in automotive technology. Incorporated into this degree program is the Automotive Student Service Education Training Program (ASSET), which is part of a joint effort between the school and Ford Motor Company. The automotive technology programs and the instructors are ASE-certified. The school also offers the NSF STEM scholarship for students enrolling in technology programs.

Small Engine Repair Certificate of Proficiency

The small engine repair program requires completion of 12-13 units of study. In addition to the courses in the certificate program, students complete 3 units of automotive technology courses. This program is aimed at individuals interested in repairing small (2- and 4-cycle) engines, such as lawnmowers, motorcycles, and chainsaws. Through lectures and lab courses, students learn the properties and characteristics of internal combustion engines. Students become familiar with electronic fuel injection systems and the electronic/electrical components as they relate to automotives. Graduates are qualified to take ASE certification exams.
