Essential Information

The broad field of engineering includes many different sub-disciplines, such as civil, electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering. Connecticut has several 4-year colleges and universities that offer graduate and undergraduate degree programs in these sub-disciplines, as well as in the general field of engineering. In addition, some schools may also offer joint bachelor's/master's degree programs, or engineering/business graduate degree programs. Graduate programs may have a time limit in which the program must be completed.

Engineering programs tend to offer hands-on training, with students participating in projects, capstones or internships. In addition, students generally have the opportunity to participate in research or engineering-based student organizations. Graduation and admission requirements vary by the individual program. The schools described below represent the 10 largest schools in Connecticut with engineering degree programs.


Central Connecticut State University

Central Connecticut State University, which is located in New Britain, offers two bachelor's degree programs through the university's Engineering Department. The school features bachelor's programs in civil and mechanical engineering, and the coursework in each program includes technical laboratory courses, along with required courses in calculus and physics. Both programs include a senior design capstone course. These programs are accredited by ABET, which is the accrediting agency for postsecondary programs in engineering, applied science, computing and engineering technology. Any student who has reached senior standing in either program is eligible to sit for the FE exam.

Fairfield University

This school in Fairfield features bachelor's and master's degree programs in engineering. Undergraduate students can pursue ABET-approved bachelor's degrees in mechanical, computer, electrical or software engineering. The software engineering and electrical engineering programs also include a dual degree option that results in a bachelor's and master's degree in only five years of study. The school offers graduate programs in electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering and software engineering. Each master's program allows students to choose thesis or non-thesis options, and students also select a specialization within their chosen program.

Quinnipiac University

Located in Hamden, Quinnipiac University has four bachelor's degree programs specifically in engineering. Students may choose to major in mechanical, industrial, civil or software engineering. All of the programs include a set of core engineering courses in addition to specialized coursework. Towards the end of each program, students can expect to complete a design project and participate in an engineering internship. Students in each program are trained in analyzing and interpreting engineering systems and data. Troubleshooting and creating solutions for engineering problems are also major components of the programs. While these programs aren't currently accredited by ABET, Quinnipiac plans to seek initial accreditation by Fall 2016.

Trinity College

Trinity College is based in Hartford and offers students Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree programs in engineering. The BS program is ABET-accredited and features concentration options in mechanical, biomedical, electrical and computer engineering. The BA program is intended for students who plan to pursue a career outside of engineering that requires knowledge of scientific and technological principles. Both program options include a set of core courses focused on math, science and engineering, as well as a senior capstone course. Students in the BA program also take courses outside of engineering, such as economics and public policy.

United States Coast Guard Academy

This New London-based institution offers students free tuition and living costs, but they must commit to work as Coast Guard officers for five years after graduation. The school offers Bachelor of Science programs in naval architecture and marine engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering. Students in the naval architecture and marine engineering program have the opportunity to participate in 6-week internships every summer. Students in the electrical engineering program can choose a specialization in systems or computers. All four of the bachelor's programs at the United States Coast Guard Academy are accredited by ABET.

University of Bridgeport

This school, which is found in Bridgeport, features bachelor's degree programs in computer engineering and electrical engineering. The computer engineering program is ABET-approved and consists of 132 credit hours, with students learning about electronics, computer architecture and computing theory. The electrical engineering program is 120 credit hours with courses in network analysis, digital design and systems. Each program includes fundamental math and science courses to complement the engineering training. Master's programs in electrical, mechanical, computer and biomedical engineering are available as well.

University of Connecticut

University of Connecticut (UConn) in Storrs has several degree programs in engineering at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. UConn's School of Engineering consists of seven departments: biomedical, chemical and biomolecular, civil and environmental, computer science, electrical and computer, materials science and mechanical engineering. Each department features its own set of degree and minor programs with unique admission and program requirements. Students may choose to study any one of the department's main topic areas.

UConn has 10 research centers that cater to the needs of engineering students, including the Center for Clean Energy Engineering and the Institute of Materials Science. Engineering students also have the opportunity to earn professional experience through one of the university's co-op, internship or research experience programs. The School of Engineering has 130 full-time faculty members, many of whom have been recognized for academic excellence. All of UConn's undergraduate engineering programs are ABET-accredited.

University of Hartford

Located in West Hartford, the University of Hartford offers prospective engineering students several bachelor's and master's degree programs. The College of Engineering, Technology and Architecture (CETA) has three departments devoted to engineering. Bachelor's degree students have the option to major in biomedical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, mechanical or acoustical engineering. The bachelor's programs are ABET-accredited and include preparation for eventual licensure.

At the master's level, students can choose from programs in civil, electrical, mechanical or environmental engineering. Master's degree students may also enroll in a dual engineering and business administration degree program. Bachelor's students may opt to enroll in a 5-year degree program that includes earning a bachelor's and master's degree. In 2011, CETA had 40 faculty members and more than 10 student organizations related to engineering.

University of New Haven

West Haven-based University of New Haven (UNH) has many different engineering degree programs at the bachelor's and master's degree levels. Students may choose to study electrical and mechanical engineering at both levels, and they can also find civil, chemical, system, computer and general engineering programs at the undergraduate level. Environmental and industrial engineering options are offered at the graduate level. Prospective students can also enroll in a 5-year BS/Master of Science degree program.

UNH's Tagliatela College of Engineering has more than 35 full-time faculty members and is divided into three departments. Almost all faculty members hold a terminal degree in their field or work as engineering professionals. All students can also take advantage of the school's Center for Engineering and Applied Science Education Research.

Yale University

Yale University is located in New Haven. This school offers engineering students several program options at the undergraduate and graduate degree levels. The School of Engineering & Applied Science is divided into five departments: chemical and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering and materials science, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science. Students may earn an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering, as well as a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in various engineering science sub-fields.

Terminal master's degree program options include chemical, electrical, biomedical, environmental and mechanical engineering. All master's degree programs are designed to be completed in one year, but students may take as many as four years to finish a particular program. The doctoral degree program is individually designed by the student and an advisory committee. Most doctoral candidates receive financial support through fellowship opportunities. The program must be completed within six years. All engineering students have access to more than a dozen specialized research centers that deal with all aspects of applied engineering and science.


Career Requirements

Connecticut requires most practicing engineers to be licensed by the state's Department of Consumer Protection. Professional engineers must hold an approved degree in engineering, complete at least four years of supervised work experience as engineers and pass a 2-part Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to obtain licensure. An engineer-in-training license may be obtained after completing the first part of the FE exam. License candidates who have six years of experience may have the degree requirement waived, and those candidates with at least 20 years of experience may waive the written portion of the FE exam.
