U.S. Schools and Colleges with English Degree Programs
English is one of the most common degree programs available at colleges and universities. There are many areas of concentration and specialization within an English program. Additional factors that may help a student choose a school for English include school and class sizes and the learning environment.
How to Select an English College
A major consideration for students selecting a college or university for its English degree program is the types of emphasis areas available within the English program. Within English, common areas of study include creative writing, linguistics, drama and literature. These areas can themselves have further specializations. For example, within literature, a study could concentrate on American literature, British literature or children's literature. Evaluating the potential majors and areas of concentration within an English degree program may help students to select a school.
Another factor for students selecting a school for its English program is the school and class size. While many colleges offer degrees in English, if a student wishes to pursue a particular or obscure specialization within English, or has other areas he or she wants to study that may be less popular, attending a larger school may make sense. On the other hand, smaller schools tend to have smaller class sizes, which offers students more individualized attention and instruction. For students attending English composition or writing programs, smaller class sizes may be an important factor.
Class size is one aspect of the learning environment that students should consider, but it is not the only factor. Increasingly, many schools are offering students the option of taking courses partially or totally online. Students pursuing an English degree program should consider whether or not they want instruction to take place entirely in the classroom or to have an online component.
