Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) in Richmond, Kentucky, enrolls over 16,000 students annually and offers over 100 programs. The Department of Family and Consumer Services (FCS) offers programs in child and family studies, nutrition, consumer sciences education and fashion design. FCS programs focus on the basics of human life, such as family, food, clothing and shelter. The department houses two laboratories and two studios specifically for the apparel design and merchandising program.

Bachelor of Science in Apparel Design and Merchandising

Freshman-year students take introductory courses in apparel design, merchandising and production. These courses introduce students to fabric producers, famous designers, customer characteristics and behavior, pattern fitting and alteration, and ethics in the fashion industry. In addition to apparel courses, students take general courses in English, chemistry, art, psychology and oral communication.

Sophomore-year students take an introductory course in textiles that covers different fibers, fabrics, colors and finishes. Sophomore year also includes classes in history, humanities, social science and wellness. Students also complete a co-op this semester, in which they obtain hands-on fashion design experience under the supervision of a faculty advisor.

In their junior year, students take more advanced courses that examine modern and historical social attitudes about fashion and costume. Junior-year courses also cover more technical aspects of apparel production, including pattern design, drawing for fashion, fabric evaluation, sewing and tailoring.

Students in their senior year take an advanced apparel design course that enhances their skills in fabric selection and pattern design. They also take an advanced product development course and a practicum course in design and merchandising. The last course students are required to take is an ethics class in family and consumer sciences. This course focuses on public policy and activism in relation to the family.
