Fire fighter classes are found at specialized fire fighter training institutes and colleges that offer fire science degree programs. Community colleges that offer fire fighter classes typically offer both associate degree and certification classes that adhere to the minimum requirements for fire fighters, which vary by state.
Students are introduced to the science of fires, how to prevent and subdue both residential fires and wild fires and how to respond to emergency situations. Potential fire fighters also learn how to protect themselves and their colleagues from the inherent dangers of this profession.
Here are some major concepts found in fire fighting courses:
Fire fighters are first responders and are trained in emergency services protocols. In this course, students learn basic emergency protocols, which include communication, infection control, CPR, first aid and response to hazardous materials. A basic emergency services course is required for most prospective fire fighters.
This course is usually taken at the beginning of a 2-year fire science degree program. Students learn about the history of fire fighting, fire protection issues, chemistry of fire and firefighting career opportunities. State requirements relating to fire department operations are also discussed.
In a fire fighter strategies course, students learn about the overarching organization of command at fire scenes. Topics like operation planning, preliminary fire scene assessment, chain of command and equipment allocation are studied. This course is designed for fire fighters who want to become fire department supervisors. The prerequisite for this fire fighter class is introductory coursework in fire science.
Students learn how to minimize the risk of injury and death while engaged in fire fighting and emergency procedures. Students review safety measures and learn about protective gear and safety laws. This course may be taken in the second semester of a 2-year fire science degree program.
Hydraulic theory is introduced in this course. Students learn about water and hose dynamics, including engine and nozzle pressure, water drafting and fire streams. They also study flow and pump testing, velocity, discharge and pressure losses. This fire fighting class is intended for intermediate fire science students.
Students in this course learn about the behavior of fires that break out in forest and range lands, which are known as wildland fires. Suppression strategies for wildland fires are learned through lectures and simulation exercises. Issues in suppressing wildland fires are discussed; these issues include topography, weather conditions and land slope. This course is can be taken at any time during a fire science program. An advanced wildland course may follow this introductory course.
