Essential Information

Radiography is a medical specialty that uses images of the inside of the human body to diagnose and treat illnesses and diseases. Students seeking a program related to this field have multiple options in Florida, such as an associate's degree in radiography, which prepares them for state certification as radiologic technologists. In addition to classroom study of radiography, these programs provide students with hands-on training and clinical experience at medical facilities affiliated with the school. Some schools also offer bachelor's degree programs that build upon the skills learned in an associate's degree program, and some programs offer online coursework. Advanced certificate programs are also available in a specific technology, such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Such programs usually require an existing certification in the radiology field to enroll.

Miami Dade College

Miami Dade College's School of Health Sciences, located in the Medical Center Campus in Miami, Florida, houses the college's Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree program in radiography, which is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Students in this 2-year program engage in radiography coursework and clinical education at college-affiliated clinical facilities. Students can take courses in anatomy and physiology, physics of radiology, body positioning, biology of radiation and imaging modalities.

  • Program Offered: AAS in Radiography
  • Undergraduate Tuition & Fees (2013-2014): $3,426 (in-state), $11,955 (out-of-state)*
  • School Type & Setting: 4-year, primarily associate's, public; large city

Valencia College

Serving Osceola and Orange Counties, Valencia College comprises several locations in and around Orlando, Florida. The college's health sciences career programs include radiography associate's and bachelor's degree programs, as well as two advanced technical certificates in the areas of MRI and CT.

The CT advanced certificate program teaches students to use x-rays and computers to acquire specialized images of the body for use in disease diagnosis, while the MRI program teaches them to use radio waves and computerized equipment for this purpose. Students who wish to enroll in one of the certificate programs need to already be certified in sonography, radiography or a related field. Students also receive ARRT certification examination preparation, which requires them to participate in sectional anatomy and fundamentals of CT or MRI courses, as well as complete clinical experiences.

Both the associate's and bachelor's programs in radiography are accredited by the JRCERT, so program graduates can sit for the national certification examination radiologic technologists. Students enrolled in the associate's program take courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, radiography principles, psychology, pathology and radiation protection. Those in the bachelor's programs build on these topics and must possess an associate's degree. The bachelor's program has a required practicum, but the rest of the program may be done online.
