There are two schools in New York that offer short-term programs that cover game programming. These programs are in game design, which is a field that's available mostly at the bachelor's degree level, though undergraduate certificate options can also be found. A few other schools offer courses in game programming, though these schools do not award a degree or certificate. Overviews of the certificate programs and courses are provided below, followed by a table that shows school information, including tuition.
Bramson ORT College
Bramson ORT College offers a certificate program in game design at its campuses in Queens and Brooklyn. This program prepares students for careers in game programming, game design, and computer animation. The 30-credit program covers subjects like game engineering and C++ programming.
The College of Saint Rose
Located in Albany, The College of Saint Rose was founded in 1920. During the 2011-2012 school year, the student-faculty ratio at the college was 14:1. The computer science department offers a 24-credit Certificate in Game Design program. The program includes courses in programming, artificial intelligence, animation, game design, and programming mobile devices.
New York University
Students working towards a degree at NYU can earn credit over the summer through a selection of game programming courses. These courses take place across two sessions from May to August, running in six-week sessions. Workshops focus on basic tenants of the field, with students learning about game design, development, and programming.
State University of New York - Polytechnic Institute
Though SUNY Polytechnic doesn't have a traditional certificate program, it does offer several game programming courses that can be taken by non-matriculated students who do not wish to immediately pursue a degree. Students can take courses in topics such as 3D animation and game production, and any credits earned can be applied later towards a degree program if students decide to enroll full-time.
