South Bay Adult School
Founded in 1918, South Bay Adult School has been serving Gardena and surrounding areas for over 90 years. It is the 11th-largest adult school in the state and boasts more than 10,000 annual registrations. SBAS offers a diverse array variety of classes and programs, including the folloing:
Adult High School Program
This program provides adult students with the opportunity to complete their high school education. Students can work to improve math, reading and writing skills to prepare for the California State High School Exam or to earn a general educational development (GED) certificate.
Online GED Preparation Program
Students looking to pass the GED exam but lacking the time to attend a traditional program can opt for SBAS's online preparation program. The program features interactive practice lessons that can be completed at the school computer lab or anywhere with internet access, 24 hours a day.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Program
ESL courses are offered at basic and advanced levels to adult students in need of improved English-language skills. SBAS provides a number of interactive and enjoyable teaching tools, such as distance learning program is also available for ESL students.
Students can take basic computer literacy courses in subjects such as keyboarding and web technology. Select courses also focus on various software applications such as Quickbooks or Excel.
This program is designed to help students acquire U.S. citizenship. The course provides assistance with the application process and reviews topics covered on the citizenship exam, such as U.S. History and government, culture and customs, and geography.
Healthcare and Fitness Courses
A nutrition course provides a basic overview on nutritional principles. Students learn about the importance of eating healthy, as well as tips and techniques for maintaining a proper diet.
Fine Arts Courses
Courses, such as acrylic paints, provide students the opportunities to explore new creative mediums or fine-tune artistic skills. Students also learn about artistic materials and basic color techniques
