Mid Florida Tech
Mid Florida Tech offers a number of professional, technical and continuing education programs for students near Orlando, Florida. The 2-year public college offers 53 certificate programs in arts and entertainment, legal services, hospitality, automotive technology, construction, health services and business administration.
Diesel Technology Certificate Program
This program, which is approved by the National Automotive Service Technicians Education Foundation and meets academic standards set by the Automotive Service Excellence Standards of Quality, prepares students to work as heavy equipment mechanics. Students learn to install, repair and maintain mechanical components in vehicles with diesel engines. The program provides students with 1,350 hours of training and includes courses in diesel mechanics, occupational safety, electrical components and diagnostic engine services.
The diesel engines program offers specializations for diesel hydraulic technicians, brake technicians, heating and cooling technicians, steering and suspension technicians and drive train technician. After completing this program, students may find jobs with dealerships, repair shops, heavy vehicle rental companies and construction businesses.
Washington-Holmes Technical Center
Washington-Holmes Technical Center, established in 1965, is a small college that offers 24 technical and professional programs. Located in northwest Florida, Washington-Holmes Technical Center offers separate programs for heavy equipment operators and heavy equipment mechanics.
Heavy Equipment Operation Certificate Program
Students in the heavy equipment operation program learn to safely operate heavy trucks, bulldozers, tractors and other large vehicles. The program provides 1,200 hours of training and includes courses in heavy equipment vehicle maintenance, tractor operation, off-road equipment operation and crane operation. Students learn proper operational practices and how to work with other construction professionals to meet overall transportation objectives. Heavy equipment labs teach students advanced operation skills such as digging, grading and excavating.
Heavy Equipment Mechanics Certificate Program
This program provides students with 1,800 hours of training. Students learn to repair and maintain engine, brake, fuel and drive train systems in heavy equipment vehicles. The program teaches students to perform basic and advanced mechanical repairs on tractors, heavy trucks, bulldozers and other vehicles with diesel engines. Courses are offered in diesel engine mechanics, preventative maintenance, diesel brake systems, heating, cooling, steering, suspension and power train systems. Students who complete this program can seek positions as heavy equipment mechanics with construction companies, mechanic shops, heavy equipment dealerships and similar employers.
