Hospitality Management Certificate and Degree Programs in New York

New York has over 20 colleges that offer hospitality programs. Learn about degree programs, tuition info and program options for ten of the largest schools to make an informed education decision.

Essential Information

Hospitality programs teach students about industry-specific operations, marketing and cost controls. Programs in New York are typically offered at the associate and bachelor's degree levels, though master's degrees also exist. Degree programs may offer concentrations in hotel and restaurant management, food and beverage management or tourism management.

Another option available to students is a certificate program in hospitality, hotel operations or hotel management, which may require completion of 29-35 credit hours. For many programs, opportunities are available for students to participate in internships and gain practical experience in the field.


Buffalo State SUNY

Buffalo State - The State University of New York (SUNY) is based in Buffalo and offers a bachelor's degree in hospitality administration. Students can pursue concentrations in restaurant and institutional management or hotel tourism management. In addition to 400 hours of practical experience, students in both concentrations take courses in food and beverage management, hospitality operations, legal issues, marketing and computer applications. Students can also choose to minor in hospitality administration.

CUNY New York City College of Technology

Located in Brooklyn, the City University of New York (CUNY) New York City College of Technology has hospitality associate and bachelor's degree programs. Students who earn the associate degree can pursue employment opportunities or transfer to a bachelor's degree program. Courses in the associate degree program include perspectives in hospitality management, wine and beverage management, culinary arts and hospitality marketing.

Students in the bachelor's program take courses in hotel and resort management, culinary and pastry arts, travel and tourism, and food and beverage management. The internship requires that students complete 120 hours of work over a minimum of eight weeks.

Monroe Community College

Monroe Community College is based in Rochester and features a hotel management certificate and a hospitality management associate degree program. The hotel management certificate program requires 35 credits and includes courses in hotel operations, hospitality services, human resource management, and banquet and event planning.

The hospitality management associate degree program is 65-70 credits and includes general education requirements, hospitality courses and an internship. Students also have the option of participating in concentrations involving travel, food service and culinary arts, hotel and golf management.

Niagara County Community College

Niagara County Community College is located in Sanborn and has hospitality certificate and associate degree programs. Students enrolled in the hospitality operations certificate program are required to complete 29 credits and take courses in culinary foundations, hotel operations, culinary foundations, and conventions and meetings management.

Students in the hospitality management associate degree program must complete 64 credits. The program consists of general education requirements, electives, hospitality courses and a seminar.

Onondaga Community College

Based in Syracuse, Onondaga Community College offers a hospitality management associate degree with specializations in culinary management, food service/institutional management, hotel management and restaurant management. The degree requires that all students take core courses in information systems, sanitation, nutrition and food preparation. Students also have an opportunity to take trips to New York City and Las Vegas.

Paul Smith's College

Located in Paul Smiths, Paul Smith's College offers an associate degree program in hotel and restaurant management and a bachelor's program in hotel, resort and tourism management. Both programs include practical experience, allowing students to learn in real-world working environments. The associate degree program includes courses in beverage management, food service sanitation, front office management, hotel accounting and human resource management. Students in the bachelor's program take courses similar to those found in the associate program, as well as courses in event planning, resort and recreation management, marketing and wine studies.

Rochester Institute of Technology

The Rochester Institute of Technology is located in Rochester and has hospitality programs at the associate and master's degree levels. Students enrolling in the hospitality and service management associate degree program can pursue specializations in hotel and resort management or food and beverage management. Both of the programs are 60 credits and include courses and a co-op experience.

The hospitality-tourism management master's degree program requires that students complete 30 credits worth of coursework in writing strategies, research methods, tourism branding, economic performance analysis and assessment of hospitality industry. Students have the option of culminating the program with a thesis, capstone or exam.

St. John's University

St. John's University is based in Queens, and students at the school can earn a bachelor's degree in hospitality management. The program is 126 credits and ensures that students have an understanding of the current issues in the hospitality industry and the communication involved in talking with clients. Students have an opportunity to participate in internships to gain practical experience in the field.

SUNY College of Technology at Delhi

SUNY College of Technology at Delhi has hotel and restaurant management programs at the associate and bachelor's degree levels. Students are required to complete 320 hours of work experience and have an opportunity to intern with Disney.

The bachelor's degree program in hotel and restaurant management accepts first-year students and transfer students from the associate degree program. In addition to completing courses, students in this program spend six months working for Disney in Orlando. The bachelor's degree program is also available online.

Trocaire College

Trocaire College is located in Buffalo and offers certificate and associate degree programs in hospitality management. The certificate program requires that students complete a minimum of 35 credits, while the associate degree program requires a minimum of 65 credits.

Students in both programs take courses in hospitality management and leadership, sales and marketing, human resources management, and hotel and resort service and management. The school also offers students the opportunity to participate in an internship with Disney.
