Colleges and universities located in and around Las Vegas offer programs for adults who need to develop or enhance educational, professional or personal skills. More details about two of these institutions and their adult schools are provided in this article.

Schools and Programs

Adult learners residing around Las Vegas can find education opportunities at 2-year colleges and 4-year universities. Courses and certificate programs are designed to help students develop vocational skills in many areas, including welding, public relations, fashion design, and facilities maintenance.

Various personal enrichment courses can help adults focus on a specific interest, such as cooking or dancing, or prepare them to earn their GED or improve their language and communication skills. Programs are also offered that build job search skills or allow adults to earn management certificates. Some programs could offer online courses. College of Southern Nevada's Adult School Programs

The Division of Workforce and Economic Development at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) offers personal enrichment and career enhancement programs in addition to adult literacy and language programs. Adult students can complete a high school diploma, train for a specific career or take courses purely for leisure. Only one bachelor degree program is offered, which is an online Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. Otherwise, degree options are restricted to the associate and certificate levels.

Adult Literacy and Language Program

CSN's adult literacy program prepares students who have not graduated from high school to take the General Educational Development (GED) test. Courses are offered in all the basic areas covered on the GED exam, including mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing. The program also includes English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, which are designed for students who wish to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. A course on reducing accents helps students with pronunciation and understanding cultural norms, such as body gestures.

Computer Technology Program

Several fields of focus are offered through the Computing & Information Technology (CIT) department's associate's degree program. The department also offers certificate tracks in Electronic Crime Investigation and Information Management. Students learn about network computing and office software.

Arts and Crafts Courses

Designed for leisure and personal development, adult school courses in arts and crafts help students explore new hobbies or enhance artistic abilities. Classes are offered in stained glass, pottery, sewing and oil painting.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Adult School Programs

The Division of Educational Outreach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) provides adult school programs to the Las Vegas community. Continuing Education provides career enhancement as well as personal enrichment programs. Moreover, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute provides enrichment opportunities for older adults.

Computer Programs

Students can complete certificate programs in Internet technology, print design or Microsoft Office technologies. Courses are also offered in home personal computing or in graphic design technologies.

Professional Certificate Programs

UNLV offers a variety of professional certificate programs aimed at adult students seeking career skills enhancement. Programs include non-profit management, paralegal studies, fashion design and public relations.

Personal Finance Courses

UNLV's adult school offerings include several personal enrichment courses in the area of personal finance. Courses include retirement planning, stock market investment and portfolio management.

Culinary Arts Program

Several culinary arts courses are also designed for the adult student, including courses in specific cooking techniques, marketing culinary creations and managing kitchen supplies. Graduates might become chefs in restaurants or in private homes.
