Life Sciences Degrees in New Jersey with School Information

Essential Information

There are several degree program options for students looking to study the life sciences in New Jersey. Many colleges offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in a wide range of life sciences concentrations, including biology and chemistry. There are more than 30 2- and 4-year colleges and universities for students to choose from. Ten of the largest schools are presented below.


Essex County College

The Division of Biology & Chemistry at Essex County College in Newark offers associate's degree programs in both biology and chemistry. The Associate of Science in Biology/Pre-Medicine prepares students to enter a variety of disciplines upon transfer to a 4-year college. Students may continue to study a life sciences major or may continue on to a medical discipline, such as dentistry. The chemistry major also prepares students for transfer.

Fairleigh Dickinson University

Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison offers plenty of undergraduate and graduate degree options for students interested in the life sciences. Undergraduates may choose between majors in biochemistry, biology or chemistry, but there are many paths to take within each major. For instance, biochemistry students may choose to pursue the prepharmacy program or enroll in one of the joint undergraduate/graduate degree options such as the BS Biochemistry/MA Science, Cosmetic Science Concentration. Biology students, on the other hand, may pursue a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine upon graduation of the undergraduate program or concentrate on one of the 13 undergraduate biology concentrations. Many of the joint programs require transfer to another college upon completion of the undergraduate portion. Graduate programs are also available in biology or chemistry.

Kean University

The School of Environmental and Life Sciences at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, offers degree programs in biology, chemistry and earth science. In addition to undergraduate and graduate programs, students may also choose an area of concentration, such as medical technology and geological sciences.

Montclair State University

Located in Montclair, New Jersey, Montclair State University is a 4-year public institution that enrolls more than 20,000 students each year. This school offers both bachelor's and master's degrees in the life sciences, specifically in the areas of biology, molecular biology and biochemistry. Students may also concentrate in a specific area, such as environmental science and physiology. Some undergraduate programs also offer teaching certification.

New Jersey Institute of Technology

The College of Science and Liberal Arts at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark offers programs in both biological sciences and chemistry & environmental science. Biology programs combine math, science and computer science for a contemporary study of biology. Undergraduate chemistry students may find entry-level work upon graduation or continue on to graduate study.

Rowan University

Rowan University in Glassboro offers programs in biological sciences, chemistry and biochemistry through its College of Science & Mathematics. These undergraduate degree programs either prepare students for professional work or to teach science at the high school level. Rowan graduates also boast a high acceptance rate to graduate programs.

Rutgers University

With campuses in Newark, Camden and New Brunswick, Rutgers University is one of the largest postsecondary institutions in the state of New Jersey, enrolling more than 58,000 students annually. Rutgers is a 4-year public university that offers an undergraduate degree in biology, along with several graduate degrees in various specialties of the life sciences. Students may also be required to choose an area of concentration. For example, microbiology graduate students may specialize in marine microbiology, applied microbiology or plant pathology, to name a few.

Seton Hall University

Seton Hall University in South Orange has both undergraduate and graduate programs in biology and chemistry through the College of Arts & Sciences. Graduate chemistry students are offered research prospects in areas such as analytical, organic and inorganic chemistry. Graduate programs are offered both in the evening and during the day to accommodate working students.

Union County College

Union County College, a 2-year school in Cranford, offers associate's degree programs in biology and chemistry. These programs prepare students to move on to a 4-year college upon graduation and continue their studies. In two years of study, students are required to complete general education courses such as English and math in addition to major area classes.

William Paterson University of New Jersey

Located in Wayne, William Paterson University of New Jersey's College of Science and Health has degree programs for students interested in studying life sciences. Students may pursue an undergraduate degree in chemistry, biology or biotechnology. Graduate students may choose between a thesis or non-thesis track, depending on their goal upon graduation. Graduate programs must be completed within 6 years.
