Essential Information

Most mechatronic employees begin by enrolling in an associate or bachelor's degree program in the field. Others may pursue a master's degree in mechatronics or a related engineering field. Students will receive instruction about a combination of electronic, mechanical, computer and control engineering. Many degree programs offer students the chance to engage in practical experience through laboratory work and internship opportunities with local corporations. Graduates are expected to be able to be competent with the application of a number of aspects of engineering, including mechanical and electronic design skills.

Master of Science in Mechatronics

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Mechatronics is a relatively new graduate degree program. Most programs can be completed in two years or fewer and introduce students to advanced engineering and mechatronics topics with courses including:

Continuing Education

Engineers who plan to offer their services to the public directly must be certified by the state in which they work. This involves holding an engineering-related degree from an accredited institution, having four years of experience and passing a state administered exam. This exam is often divided into two sections called Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice of Engineering. A certified engineer is referred to as a Professional Engineer (PE).

Many workshops are available to mechatronics engineers who wish to keep up to date on current advancements and technology in the field. Because of the highly technical nature of mechatronics, new developments are common. Seminars may address topics like control systems, mechatronics education and electrohydraulics.

Some mechatronics engineers may choose to pursue additional coursework in mechatronics or a related field at a local university or through an engineering organization. Doctoral programs in engineering are also available and may prepare professionals for academic or scholarly careers in the field.
