Mechatronics Training Programs and Requirements

Mechatronics involves a combination of electronic, mechanical, computer and control engineering. Students study the field formally through degree programs that may help them secure positions in areas like transportation systems or communications networks.

Training Requirements and Recommendations

Most employers seek out mechatronics candidates that have at least an associate's degree in the field. Many positions are only available to graduates of bachelor's degree programs in mechatronics or a related field. A graduate degree in the field may be necessary for some development or research positions.

Formal Education

Most mechatronic employees begin by enrolling in an associate or bachelor's degree program in the field. Others may pursue a master's degree in mechatronics or a related engineering field.

Associate of Applied Science

An Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Mechatronics is a 2-year, undergraduate degree program. Students may take courses in subjects like industrial electronics, mechanical systems and pneumatics. Some general education requirements are usually form part of the curriculum.

Bachelor of Science

Students in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechatronics will study topics such as engineering analysis, solid mechanics and digital control systems in this 4-year, undergraduate degree program. Math, science and liberal arts courses are also required to graduate.

Master of Science

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Mechatronics is a relatively new graduate degree program. Most programs can be completed in two years or fewer and introduce students to advanced engineering and mechatronics topics, including adaptive control in mechatronic systems, analytical mechatronic dynamics and advanced microprocessors.

Job Experience

Employers generally seek graduates who have some experience working within the mechatronics field. Many degree programs offer students the chance to engage in practical experience through laboratory work and internship opportunities with local corporations. Graduates are expected to be able to be competent with the application of a number of aspects of engineering, including mechanical and electronic design skills.

Licenses and Certifications

Engineers who plan to offer their services to the public directly must be certified by the state in which they work. This involves holding an engineering-related degree from an accredited institution, having four years of experience and passing a state administered exam. This exam is often divided into two sections called Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice of Engineering. A certified engineer is referred to as a Professional Engineer (PE).

Workshops and Seminars

Many workshops are available to mechatronics engineers who wish to keep up to date on current advancements and technology in the field. Because of the highly technical nature of mechatronics, new developments are common. Seminars may address topics like control systems, mechatronics education and electrohydraulics.

Additional Professional Development

Some mechatronics engineers may choose to pursue additional coursework in mechatronics or a related field at a local university or through an engineering organization. Doctoral programs in engineering are also available and may prepare professionals for academic or scholarly careers in the field.
