Essential Information

Students in Massachusetts have four medical school options from which to earn a doctoral degree. While all of the following schools offer medical doctorate degrees, many additionally offer dual or combined degrees, often within a specialization. Individuals studying to be doctors will spend a large amount of time immersed in practicum outside of the classroom and laboratory training. Competition for admission to medical programs is often steep and students with related undergraduate degrees will fare better than those without.

All of the schools presented below provide the necessary education for graduates to eventually become licensed medical doctors.

Boston University

Boston University in Boston is home to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree program. For students looking for additional degree options, the school features joint degree programs that allow medical students to also earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Clinical Investigation or Master of Public Health in conjunction with the Doctor of Medicine degree. Incoming students must submit letters of recommendation and MCAT test scores, and they must also have completed a year of studies in biology, general chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, physics, humanities and English at the undergraduate level. The first year of the program features foundational courses related to the medical field, such as physiology, biochemistry and anatomy. Students begin talking to patients and participating in workshops throughout their second year, which is followed by internships and clinical experiences during the third and fourth years of the program.

Harvard University

Cambridge is home to Harvard University, which offers a Doctor of Medicine degree program. Along with being able to demonstrate knowledge of physical and biological sciences at the undergraduate level, students have to share their personal credentials during the admission process to get into the program. Students in the program have to choose between the new pathway or health sciences and technology options. The health sciences and technology option is intended for students who want to get involved in biomedical research, and it also allows students to opt for a 5-year plan that includes additional research opportunities. Students can also complement their Doctor of Medicine degree by completing a joint program that leads to a Ph.D., Master of Public Health, Master in Public Policy or MBA.

Tufts University

Students can earn a Doctor of Medicine degree at Tufts University, which is found in Medford. Alongside the Doctor of Medicine degree program, students who want to earn an additional degree can select from the following joint offerings: Master of Public Health, Ph.D. (Medical Scientist Training Program), Master of Arts in International Relations or MBA in Health Management. Core requirements of the Doctor of Medicine program include a combination of courses, clinical training and research. The coursework in the program covers addiction medicine, medical interviews, evidence-based medicine, neuroscience, pharmacology and tissue and organ biology. Along with filling out primary and secondary applications, incoming students must provide MCAT scores and meet the necessary undergraduate eligibility requirements.

University of Massachusetts Medical School Worcester

Students in Worcester can pursue a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Massachusetts Medical School Worcester. This school has the distinguishing characteristic of being the only public medical school in Massachusetts. A faculty member committee determines admission into the program and students must meet admission requirements that include completion of undergraduate coursework in biology, physics, chemistry and English. The first couple of years in the program are spent developing a student's foundation in medicine. Courses cover pharmacology, human genetics and infections. Students begin core clinical work during their second year. Those who are looking for joint degree options can earn a Ph.D., Master of Public Health or Master of Science in Clinical Investigation along with the Doctor of Medicine degree.

Career Requirements

The state of Massachusetts requires physicians and medical doctors to be licensed by the state. In order to be eligible for licensure, students must complete pre-medical education, four years of medical school and two years of postgraduate medical training. Aspiring physicians must then pass state or national examinations, and applicants need to submit numerous written statements with their application.
