New York Advertising Universities, Colleges and Schools

Programs in advertising can be found at colleges and universities that offer associate, bachelor's and master's degrees not only in this field of study but also in business, communications or marketing. Relevant certificates and degree program minors are also available. Additionally, students might be able to choose a sub-specialization, such as advertising management, creative advertising, integrated marketing communications or copywriting.
Many programs allow students to develop practical skills by integrating an internship experience, and some schools offer a study abroad opportunity. Other development opportunities exist through participation in workshops and student clubs and the creation of a professional work portfolio. The ten schools profiled below include three associated with either the City University of New York (CUNY) or the State University of New York (SUNY), as well as seven private not-for-profit institutions. CUNY New York City College of Technology
The Department of Advertising Design and Graphic Arts at this Brooklyn-based technology school has been in existence since 1946, and the division offers two associate and two bachelor's programs in communication and/or design. Qualified graduates have obtained positions at a number of leading advertising agencies and companies, including FCB, Grey and Saatchi & Saatchi. Unique to the department is a semester-abroad program in England, where students learn about European advertising design.
The Associate of Applied Science in Communication Design program includes topics in communication design, media and typography. Aspiring professionals also participate in a design team, pursue an internship and complete a senior portfolio and a project. Through the Bachelor of Technology in Communication Design, students can pursue an 18-credit specialization in advertising design and take courses in campaign development, interactive art direction, print production and storyboarding. Courses in advertising, consumer behavior and marketing can also be found through the Associate of Applied Science in Marketing Management and Sales program.
Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY)
The Fashion Institute of Technology is located in New York City, and the school offers both 2- and 4-year programs in advertising and marketing. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad background in a variety of related areas, including media buying and planning, direct marketing, journalism and public relations. Students also learn how to write advertising copy and produce commercials for both radio and television. Requirements for the Bachelor of Science program include an internship.
At Marist College in Poughkeepsie, undergraduates can pursue an 18-credit minor and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a concentration in advertising. Requirements for the minor include topics in business-to-business, direct response and retail advertising, along with copywriting and broadcast commercials. Degree-seeking students also complete 18 credits of concentrated advertising coursework and pursue a sub-specialty in advertising management or creative advertising. In addition to acquiring hands-on production experience, aspiring professionals have the opportunity to visit ad agencies, enter national competitions and participate in internships.
Mohawk Valley Community College (SUNY)
Through Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, students can earn either a certificate or an associate degree in media marketing. The 30-credit certificate program introduces future professionals to the basic principles of advertising and includes courses in visual communication, copywriting, print media and salesmanship. Credits are fully transferable to the Associate of Applied Science program, in which students can also take classes in broadcast and digital media, advertising management, media planning and statistics.
New York Institute of Technology
The New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising, Public Relations, and Technology, and the core curriculum includes topics in copywriting, design, media production and public policy. Students also conduct market research and learn how to organize a print, broadcast or online ad campaign.
Through an agency workshop, future professionals become familiar with the ad agency environment and have the opportunity to work on projects for real-life clients. The program culminates in a capstone class and the creation of a portfolio.
New York University
While New York University in Manhattan does not offer a degree in advertising, relevant coursework can be found through the undergraduate marketing program. Available through the Stern School of Business, the Bachelor of Science curriculum includes topics in consumer behavior and marketing research, and students can also take an elective in advertising management.
Pace University - New York
Through the Lubin School of Business, undergraduates at Pace University in Manhattan can earn an undergraduate degree in marketing with a concentration in advertising and integrated marketing communications. The curriculum includes a business and marketing core, as well as 18 credits of specialized coursework in advertising and promotion, consumer behavior, managerial marketing and media buying. In addition to an international marketing course, students can take an advertising elective or workshop. Unique to this school is an alumni networking program and a premier internship placement rate.
Rochester Institute of Technology
Rochester's Institute of Technology offers a Bachelor of Science in Advertising and Public Relations that includes courses in mass communications, copywriting, digital design and campaign planning. Unique to the core curriculum are topics in intercultural communication and a substantial study of quantitative research. All students in the major complete a 1-semester co-op program, a portfolio and a senior thesis.
St. John's University - New York
At the Queens campus of St. John's University, students can pursue a specialized Bachelor of Science in Marketing. Areas of concentration include career-oriented tracks for art directors and copywriters, account executives and media planners. Students in all three tracks complete common coursework in media ethics, marketing and public speaking. Undergraduates have access to several academic resources, such as advertising-focused student groups and honor societies, internships and study abroad programs.
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at this Syracuse university offers an undergraduate program in advertising. The curriculum covers branding, international advertising techniques and creative production, among other topics. Students can participate in internships or join the school's student-operated ad agency.
A 12-month graduate advertising program is also available with the option to complete an emphasis in subjects such as brand management, cross-cultural advertising, and digital engagement. Core courses include topics in digital strategy, account planning, media law and visual communications. Students can also choose electives in an area of special interest, such as brand management or cross-cultural advertising. The program culminates with an advertising pitch to a real-world company. Graduate students can take advantage of guest speakers, alumni mentoring, internship placement and recruiting events.
