Essential Information

Many public and private, non-profit Oklahoma universities have degree programs in computer science or computer information technology along with programs that focus on using computers in applied technology for business, gaming or other specializations. These universities primarily offer associate's and bachelor's degrees, but a few have master's and doctoral programs, as well as graduate certificates. These schools offer a variety of features for students, including state-of-the-art computer labs, internship options and research opportunities. An overview of the programs at ten of the largest schools in Oklahoma is provided below.


Cameron University

Cameron University in Lawton offers several Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree programs in computer-related majors. Majors in information technology with concentrations in computer info systems, management information systems or cyber security/information assurance are possible at both the associate and bachelor's degree levels. A computer science major is only available at the bachelor's degree level. The bachelor's degree programs teach students advanced technical and theoretical skills and prepare graduates for supervisory or management positions. Credits earned in certain associate's degree programs may be applied toward bachelor's degree programs at the university.

East Central University

Located in Ada, East Central University offers a bachelor's degree in computer science; the program is designed to provide training in the technical and scientific facets of computing. The 124-credit hour curriculum has a math focus with an emphasis on software engineering. Students have access to Linux-based mainframe systems, as well as about 50 graphics workstations.

Northeastern State University

Northeastern State University in Tahlequah offers a bachelor's degree in computer science program in its mathematics and computer science department. Some of the required courses for this major include computer operating systems, software engineering, basic computer architecture and programming. Students must also complete technical writing and a computer-related math courses. The computer science program is located in the university's Science Building, which has been recently remodeled.

Oklahoma State University - Main Campus

Located in Stillwater, the main campus of Oklahoma State University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in two departments. The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers bachelor's degrees in computer engineering and electrical engineering with a specialization option in computers and digital. The Computer Science Department offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in computer science. Areas of research for the department include artificial intelligence, computer architecture, database and bioinformatics, graphics, networks, software engineering and cryptography.

Rogers State University

Rogers State University in Claremore offers 2-year and 4-year degree programs in computer-related majors. The Associate in Science (A.S.) in Computer Science provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work as entry-level programmers. It also prepares them for continued studies toward a bachelor's degree. The university also offers a bachelor's degree in business information technology with concentrations in computer network administration and software development/multimedia. The former covers network operating systems, network security and emergent technologies, while the latter focuses on object-oriented technology, web development, software engineering and emergent technology. A bachelor's degree in game development is also an option at this school.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University

Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant offers computer-focused undergraduate degree programs. These programs blend theory and applications into their fields of study. Bachelor's degree programs are available in computer science and computer information systems. Students have access to several computer laboratories, one of which has the technology to maintain real-time data collection of student experimental data.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University

Located in Weatherford, Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) offers a bachelor's degree in computer science with options in computer science and information systems. This 120-credit program prepares students for careers such as enterprise system architects, network administrators and information system managers. The program focuses on concepts in software engineering, database design, web page development, multimedia systems and web-based applications. Internship opportunities are available at local companies. Students may also participate on robotics competition teams and in the university's Computer Club.

University of Central Oklahoma

The University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond offers three computer-related bachelor's degrees. These 124-credit programs focus on computer science, applied computer science and computer science-information science. The applied computer science option allows students to pursue another discipline in conjunction with their technical focus, and the computer science-information science degree emphasizes business applications. Students have access to fully equipped multimedia computers in computer science classrooms. Faculty members have interest and expertise in areas such as artificial intelligence, operating systems, computer architecture, programming language translators and database systems.

University of Oklahoma - Norman Campus

Located in Norman, the University of Oklahoma-Norman Campus offers bachelor's degree programs in computer engineering and computer science. These programs require an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 to graduate; 120-121 credits are needed. The university also offers accelerated programs that combine a bachelor's degree in either field with a master's degree in computer science. These programs require 138-142 credits and an overall GPA of 3.25 to graduate, and they take five years to complete. The university also offers a doctorate in computer science that includes written and oral examinations to test a student's mastery of their field of study and ability for critical thinking.

University of Tulsa

This school of roughly 4,000 students, located in Tulsa, offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in the computer field through the Tandy School of Computer Science. The undergraduate major in information technology focuses on business and management technology, while the computer science major provides a strong foundation in the sciences and in math. The University of Tulsa offers a post-baccalaureate certificate in computer science that prepares graduates for entry-level programming jobs or enhances their existing computer skills. Graduate degrees offered include a master's degree in computer science and a doctorate in computer science. The Ph.D. program ensures students have a broad understanding of computer science disciplines and math, while it provides opportunities for specialized research in computer science.
