Essential Information

In Ohio, physical therapist assistant programs are available at two-year community colleges and four-year universities, but all schools featured below grant an associate's degree in physical therapist assistant. Students in these programs have an opportunity to gain practical experience through labs, observations and internships.

One of the program prerequisites includes having CPR certification through a healthcare organization and completing a physical exam. Students will also need to meet certain requirements prior to beginning the clinical portion, including finishing two semesters of coursework, submitting a letter of recommendation from a licensed physical therapist, performing volunteer work from a healthcare setting and completing a criminal background check and drug screen.

The physical therapist assistant programs described below have been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education and prepare students for licensure.

Clark State Community College

Clark State Community College is located in Springfield and has an associate's degree program in physical therapist assistant. Before beginning the initial PTA course, students are required to have 60 hours of observation or work experience in a professional environment. To graduate, students must complete 71 credits in physical therapy assistant courses, labs and directed practice.

Cuyahoga Community College District

Located in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Community College District offers a physical therapist assistant technology associate's degree. The 70-credit program provides courses in functional anatomy, therapeutic exercise, pediatric and geriatric physical therapy, rehabilitation procedures and physical therapy procedures. Students are required to participate in two clinical practicums.

Hocking College

Hocking College is situated in Nelsonville. Students at this school can pursue a physical therapist assistant associate's degree. Students are required to complete 69.5 credits of coursework and can graduate after five semesters. Courses cover physical therapy procedures, kinesiology, cardiopulmonary function, musculoskeletal problems and physical therapy fundamentals. The program requires students to complete three PTA-directed practice courses.

Lorain County Community College

Lorain County Community College is located in Elyria and has an associate's degree program in physical therapist assisting. The program consists of general education requirements, core physical therapy courses and three clinical practicums. Students learn about human growth and development, rehabilitation principles and physical therapist assistant procedures.

Owens Community College

Situated in Perrysburg, Owens Community College has a physical therapist assistant associate's degree program that includes courses and almost 900 hours of clinical education requirements. Students in the program learn to provide treatment and rehabilitation techniques for individuals living with pain or immobility. The program accepts 26 students each year.

Rhodes State College

Rhodes State College is located in Lima, and the physical therapist assistant associate's degree program provides students with the knowledge and skills to work in clinical and healthcare settings. After students take courses in functional anatomy, therapeutic procedures, therapeutic exercise and kinesiology, they have the opportunity to apply what they've learned during three clinical experiences.

Shawnee State University

Shawnee State University is located in Portsmouth, and the physical therapist assistant associate's degree program requires 67-69 credits and takes five semesters to complete. The program includes four clinical practicums and courses in rehabilitation procedures, neurology and rehabilitation, physical dysfunction and PTA procedures. A PTA seminar is also part of the program.

Sinclair Community College

Sinclair Community College is located in Dayton and offers a 71-credit physical therapist assistant associate's degree. In addition to clinical practicums, students are required to complete courses in neuromuscular rehabilitation, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, therapeutic exercise, clinical procedures and pathology. Graduates are qualified to provide patient education and treatment.

Stark State College

Stark State College is situated in North Canton, and students at the school can pursue an associate's degree in physical therapist assistant. The 71-credit program can be completed in five semesters. Courses include musculoskeletal anatomy, human diseases, kinesiology, PTA procedures and directed practice.

University of Cincinnati - Clermont College

The University of Cincinnati - Clermont College is located in Batavia and offers a two-year physical therapy associate's degree. Students in the program learn about cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and PTA informatics and receive clinical education. The program is typically completed in five semesters.

Career Requirements

Physical therapist assistants in the state of Ohio must have a license to practice. Graduation from a two-year, accredited physical therapist assistant program along with passing grades on a national physical therapy exam and the state jurisprudence exam are required for licensure.
