Individuals who are interested in studying project management in Indiana have a limited number of educational options to choose from. There is only one school in the state that offers a certificate program. However, there is also a university that offers an online master's degree that prepares students for a professional certification in project management. Another option is a bachelor's degree with a concentration in supply chain and information management, which incorporates project management coursework. There are no previous educational requirements for the certificate and bachelor's degree program, but it is necessary to hold a bachelor's degree before enrolling in a master's degree program.
University of Southern Indiana
The University of Southern Indiana, which is located in Evansville, offers the only project management certificate program in the state. The program consists of a series of relevant courses; interested individuals can take them all in order to earn the certificate, or they can just attend the sessions in which they are interested. Topics of study include project management framework, cost management, quality management, human resource management and risk management, among others. Courses are offered in the evenings in order to meet the needs of individuals with daytime work commitments. It is important to note that the program does not prepare students for professional certification exams.
Purdue University - Purdue Polytechnic Institute
Purdue Polytechnic offers a Master of Science in IT Project Management. The school is based in West Lafayette, but the program is offered online. Even though there is no certificate program available, the program does prepare graduates for the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification exam. The program is entirely self-paced, so it can be completed in as few as eleven months or as many as five years. Aspiring project managers learn about relevant topics such as project estimating, scheduling and control, as well as information technology topics such as IT economics and procurement management.
Indiana University - Southeast
There is no project management certificate offered through Indiana University - Southeast, which is located in New Albany, but undergraduates in the school's Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business program can choose a concentration in supply chain and information management, and many graduates go on to careers in project management. Project Management is one of the required course titles; others cover relevant topics such as supply chain management, total quality management and business intelligence. It is also important to note that general education courses are also required to complete this bachelor's degree program.
As mentioned above, some project management programs are sometimes designed to prepare students to sit for one of the Project Management Institute's (PMI) official certification exams. PMI certifications are globally accredited, can be transferred across national borders and are usually obtained by passing a comprehensive examination. The most common certifications pursued by program graduates include the Project Management Professional (PMP) and the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM).
