University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Founded more than 200 years ago, the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill is one of the oldest state universities in the country. UNC's School of Medicine offers graduate radiology fellowship and residency programs, while the Department of Allied Health Sciences' Division of Radiologic Science offers undergraduate and certificate programs in radiology.
Certificate in Radiography
This 2-year program prepares students for national certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiologic technology. Coursework covers basic medical terminology and patient care, radiographic procedures, imaging techniques and radiation biology. Students must also complete clinical observations. Graduates may enter the medical field as radiographers, also known as radiologic technologists.
Certificate in Radiation Therapy
Applicants to this 12-month program must be certified radiologic technologists. Students take introductory classes in radiation therapy theory and advanced coursework in radiation physics, cancer biology and radiation histopathology. The clinical practicum is completed at UNC hospitals with external rotations taking place in nearby Raleigh, NC. Graduates can sit for the ARRT Examination in Radiation Therapy.
Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging
Initial classes in this program cover human anatomy and radiographic procedures. Advanced coursework covers research and leadership topics for professional radiographers. Students must complete a 2-part clinical summer internship in addition to the clinical components of each semester. Graduates may pursue an advanced degree in radiology or may sit for the ARRT Examination in Radiography.
Post-Baccalaureate Radiologist Assistant Certificate
Students entering this 2-year program must first hold a 4-year degree in a related field. Classes focus on advanced imaging procedures for different parts of the body as well as advanced pharmacology practice. Nearly half of the credits earned are based on clinical experiences, which are completed in the form of radiologist-directed clinical preceptorships. Graduates are prepared for professional careers as radiologist assistants.
Radiation Oncology Residency
This selective 4-year program is designed for licensed physicians. Students are trained in clinical radiation oncology, cancer management, radiation treatment techniques and tumor biology. Coursework also includes electives in radiation physics and surgical and medical oncology. Students also participate in a 6-month research component. The program is completed at the NC Clinical Cancer Center, where students conduct both research and clinical rotations on real patients.
Cape Fear Community College
Located in Wilmington, North Carolina, Cape Fear Community College has over 50 academic concentration options. Aspiring radiographers can pursue an associate's degree to prepare for national certification. Cape Fear is affiliated with several hospitals in the Wilmington area, where radiography students have the opportunity to complete clinical rotation requirements.
Associate of Applied Science in Radiography
Coursework in this 2-year program begins with basic anatomy and physiology and moves into radiographic techniques, procedures and theory. Students also take classes in imaging analysis, physics and radiobiology. There are several prerequisites in algebra, biology and chemistry, and candidates for the program must pass a psychological assessment, background check and drug screening. Graduates are prepared to take the ARRT Examination in Radiography and to enter the medical field as radiographers.
