Radiology technician training in North Carolina can be found as radiography programs at community and technical colleges. Students in these programs learn to produce the X-ray images that doctors use to help diagnose illnesses and ailments. Programs in radiography lead to the award of primarily associate's degrees, although at least one certificate in the field is offered in the state. In addition to classroom and lab training, students will have the opportunity to work, supervised, with real patients in clinical settings.


Asheville - Buncombe Technical Community College

Located in Asheville, students enrolled at Asheville - Buncombe Technical Community College can pursue an Associate in Applied Science in Radiography. The program is 75 credits, and courses cover topics in patient care, radiography procedures, radiographic imaging, radiographic physics and radiobiology protection. Students are also required to participate in five radiology clinical education courses.

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute

Caldwell Community College is based in Hudson and has a 74-credit associate's degree in radiography. The program requires that students take courses in radiographic procedures, radiographic images, radiographic physics, radiobiology, image analysis and radiographic clinical education.

Cape Fear Community College

Cape Fear Community College is located in Wilmington and offers an associate's degree in radiography that prepares students for employment in the medical imaging field. Students are required to complete 75 credits, and the program takes five semesters to complete. The program requires that students complete general education requirements, radiology coursework and clinical education courses. The program admits 18 students per year.

Catawba Valley Community College

Catawba Valley Community College is located in Hickory and features an Associate of Applied Science in Radiography. The program is 73 credits and combines academic coursework with clinical requirements. Students in the program learn about radiation procedures, imaging procedures, patient care, maintaining equipment and professional communication.

Fayetteville Technical Community College

Based in Fayetteville, students enrolled in Fayetteville Technical Community College offers a 76-credit associate's degree in radiography that can be completed in five semesters. Forsyth Technical Community College

Forsyth Technical Community College is based in Winston Salem and offers a radiography program that can be completed in five semesters. The program admits 20 students annually.

Pitt Community College

Pitt Community College is located in Winterville and offers an associate's degree in radiography through its Health Sciences Division. The program is 76 credits and features courses in patient care, radiographic images, radiobiology protection and image analysis. Three radiographic procedure courses and five clinical education requirements are also part of the curriculum.

Rowan - Cabarrus Community College

Rowan - Cabarrus Community College is based in Salisbury and has a 5-semester associate's degree in radiography. The program features general education courses, core radiography coursework and clinical education requirements.

University of North Carolina

Located in Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina offers a radiography certificate through its School of Medicine. Courses offer students an opportunity to learn about imaging and radiography equipment, patient care, image production, human structure, image analysis, radiographic pathology, pharmacology and digital imaging. Five clinical education courses are also required.

Wake Technical Community College

Wake Technical Community College is located in Raleigh and has an associate's degree in radiography that includes general education requirements and core major coursework. In addition to clinical rotations at local medical facilities, students are also required to complete courses in patient care, image processing, radiation protection, radiobiology and radiographic exposure.

Career Requirements

In order to obtain radiology licensure in North Carolina, individuals are required to pass the certification exam offered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
