San Antonio Continuing Education Course Information and Options

Schools and Programs

Continuing education programs, available at both universities and community colleges in San Antonio, offer degree and training programs to help students reach their educational and career goals. Programs may prepare students for certification exams, and some programs are offered in the evenings and on weekends. Students may also have the opportunity to complete an externship or an apprenticeship. The two continuing education schools and their programs below are an example of what is available.

San Antonio College's Continuing Education Programs

San Antonio College, serving over 38,000 students annually, is the largest campus in the Alamo Community College District. Its Continuing Education division consists of ten departments that offer numerous occupational and short-term training programs for entry-level jobs in a variety of fields. This 2-year public school also provides full GED preparation in both English and Spanish, as well as multiple levels of English language instruction.

Certified Nursing Assistant Program

Following the Texas Board of Human Services curriculum, this 99-hour program contains almost equal parts classroom instruction and clinical experience. Infection control, safety procedures and basic nursing skills are addressed in the curriculum, in addition to understanding patients' multifaceted needs.

Green Training Initiative

Offered through the Service, Trade and Industry Center, a continuing education department, the Green Training Initiative provides guided instruction for a variety of green (environmentally oriented) careers. Green courses include weatherization, solar photovoltaic technology and all-electric vehicle conversion.

Web Development and Multimedia Program

This 5-course sequence is a popular continuing education program in the Technology Support department. The recommended courses for the Web development and multimedia program discuss Web design, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash and videocasts and podcasts.

Human Resources Generalist Program

The Professional Studies, Licensure and Certification Center provides a variety of seminars and certificate programs for working adults, such as the human resources generalist program. This 8-course program includes classes in job analysis and design, performance appraisals and federal employment law.

Law Enforcement Training Academy

Those with a high school diploma or equivalent wishing to serve their communities as peace officers may be eligible to enroll in San Antonio College's state-licensed training academy. Graduates from the 640-hour, 4-phase program can sit for the state peace officer exam.

University of the Incarnate Word's Continuing Education Programs

This private university offers certificate and adult degree completion programs through its Extended Studies department. Fulfilling its outreach mission, the university provides free electronic textbooks and reduced tuition for these evening and weekend adult programs. Following are some of the programs currently offered through Extended Studies at the University of Incarnate Word's four San Antonio learning centers:

Pharmacy Technician Certification Program

The 14-week pharmacy tech program consists of 84 hours of evening and weekend classroom instruction in pharmaceutical calculations, inventory management and pharmacy law, among other topics covered in the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam. Additionally, adult students can participate in an 80-hour pharmacy externship.

Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice

Adult students in this evening and weekend degree program choose from three specializations: law enforcement, corrections or general criminal justice. Core courses for all majors include probation and parole, juvenile delinquency and research methods. At least 120 units are required for the B.S.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, this degree program allows registered nurses with an associate's degree to earn their BSN while working. In addition to classroom instruction in more advanced nursing care, BSN students engage in clinical practice.

Elementary School Teaching Certificate

Graduates from this program earn a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. In addition to liberal arts foundation courses, adult students take core education courses and complete a semester-long student teaching apprenticeship.

Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Development

The curriculum for this degree program examines how organizations adapt to change. Adult students learn how to increase business efficiency and solve problems through a broad range of courses in management, information technology and business communication, among others.
