  • MAE is handled by the Sweetwater Union public school district.
  • Many courses are on-campus; some are online as well.

San Diego Community College District

  • SDCCD consists of six continuing education campuses, as well as three public colleges. Programs are held on-campus and online.
  • One can take noncredit classes at the continuing education campuses or earn certificates and associate's degrees at the college campuses; San Diego Mesa College is a 4-year institution that also offers a bachelor's degree.

San Diego Adult School

  • The SDAS is sponsored by the San Diego Unified School District and runs in six locations.
  • The adult education program offers two plans: one for skills improvement and one for a high school diploma.

Montgomery Adult School's Education Programs

The Montgomery Adult School is part of the Sweetwater Union High School District. The district also runs three other adult schools in the San Diego area. The school provides adult literacy programs, career technical education, English as a second language and parenting classes to residents of the San Diego community. This overview highlights just a few of the many programs available to adult students.

Adult Literacy Program

The adult literacy program provides students with the opportunity to finish their high school education. High school diploma courses prepare individuals to pass the California High School Exit Exam and receive a diploma. Students can also take General Educational Development (GED) courses to earn a high school equivalency certificate.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

Four skill levels are offered to adult students in the ESL program. After being placed in the appropriate level, ESL students learn about civics topics and work on vocabulary, reading, writing and speech skills.

Business and Finance Program

Courses include beginning and intermediate accounting, keyboarding, payroll and QuickBooks. Students learn technical skills specific to careers in these fields.

Health Science and Medical Technology Program

Courses cover such topics as medical terminology and healthcare essentials. Health science training occurs in different areas, including nursing assistant, medical assistant clinical and medical assistant administrative.

Parenting Education Program

The adult education program offers courses and workshops aimed at parents. Adults have the option of taking a parent only class or parent and child class. A multilevel class that focuses on basic parenting skills in areas like health and safety, child development and communication is also offered.

San Diego Community College District's Continuing Education Programs

San Diego Community College offers adult programs through its continuing education division. A number of courses are offered, including GED preparation, ESL programs, food and nutrition, community education, business and computers.

Arts, Crafts and Jewelry Making Classes

A number of classes are offered in jewelry fabrication, woodworking, copper enameling and printmaking. Adults in these classes can learn skills, such as soldiering, sanding and sawing.

Business and Career Development Classes

Classes include professional training, such as becoming a notary public, loan signing agent or child visitation monitor. Other skills development courses include landlord basics, makeup artistry, and horsemanship.

Computer Classes

San Diego Adult School

San Diego adults looking to improve their language and math skills or wanting to finish their high school diploma can utilize the San Diego Adult School set up by the San Diego Unified School District. Basic adult education and the diploma classes are taught at six different locations around the city.

Adult Basic Education Program

Geared towards adults who need to brush up on their skills, the Adult Basic Education program consists of two courses: Basic English and Basic Mathematics. English is an integrated course that includes reading, writing, listening, speaking and emphasizing progression in each. The course will also include spelling, vocab, and composition as well as reading comprehension. The math course focuses on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Students who complete this program often continue on with the Adult High School Diploma Program.

Adult High School Diploma Program

The diploma program includes a rigorous curriculum of the basics required for graduation (language arts, math, science and social studies), as well as covering the fine arts and practical arts. Summer classes meet daily Monday thru Friday.

Adults in San Diego are in good hands when it comes to earning their GED, training in a new career field or enhancing their love for learning. Degree and certificate programs and noncredit classes can be found at a site close by or online in many cases.
