Residents of Santa Monica, CA, can choose from adult education options offered by public school systems, colleges or community education programs. These include high school completion and workforce development programs as well as courses for leisure and personal growth. These studies are presented in individual classes or certificate programs.

Adult learners in Santa Monica can prepare for or enhance a career or enroll in personal enrichment classes through various programs offered at institutions in that region. Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District's Programs

The Adult Education Center is sponsored by the California Department of Education and is part of the local school district. The center runs adult school programs aimed at preparing students to become productive members of the workforce and community. Some course topics English as a second language (ESL) and citizenship.

General Educational Development (GED) and High School Diploma Classes

The adult education center offers GED preparation and high school diploma courses and serves as a testing site. Students get instruction in vocabulary, writing, comprehension, math and algebra; individuals who achieve the required credits can take the California High School Exit Exam to receive a diploma.

English as a Second Language Classes

The ESL program includes classes at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. There's also an academic transitional English course that focuses on improving written communication in English.

Citizenship Classes

Adults who are eligible for United States citizenship learn about the country's history, government and civics. With the help of instructors, students complete and submit their citizenship application and prepare to pass the review exam.

Santa Monica College's Adult School Programs

The Continuing and Community Education Program at Santa Monica College offers non-credit, short-term programs for adult students. Several professional certificate programs and courses and business skills courses are offered, in addition to personal interest and wellness courses.

Notary Public Seminar Course

This course trains adult students to become notary publics and provides the knowledge necessary to pass the state notary public exam. Topics include identifying document signers, avoiding lawsuits and filling out certificates.

Real Estate Courses

Students may complete a real estate principles course to prepare for the California Department of Real Estate Licensing Exam. A real estate practice course and a real estate finance course are also offered.

Computer and Internet Classes

Options for adult computer courses include a beginning skills course that teaches students how to use a personal computer and courses about general business applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Training in advanced applications, including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, are also available.

Dance Classes

Adult students learn the art of dance, and they may choose from a variety of types. Ballet, Flamenco, ballroom, jazz, tap and modern dance are some of the options available.
