School districts and universities in Stockton have a wide range of opportunities for adult learners. Stockton School for Adults' Programs

Part of the Stockton Unified School District, Stockton School for Adults provides English as a second language and career technical courses. A high school completion program offers courses in preparation for the GED or a high school diploma. The school also offers classes for seniors and adults with disabilities.

High School Diploma Program

Instruction is offered in courses required by the Stockton Unified School District Governing Board for passage of the California High School Exit Examination, allowing adults to earn a high school diploma. Subjects include biological and physical sciences, English, world history, American government and U.S. history.

English as a Second Language and Citizenship Courses

Beginning through advanced ESL and citizenship classes are provided for adults wishing to go through the U.S. naturalization process. Courses in family literacy teach parents how to provide English language assistance to school-age children.

General Educational Development (GED) Testing

The Stockton School for Adults offers GED testing in high school subjects. Passage of the GED test grants an equivalency diploma that enables a student to apply for jobs and entrance to many colleges and vocational schools.

Career Technical Education Courses

University of the Pacific's Adult School Programs

University of the Pacific is a 4-year, private school that offers adult school programs within its Center for Professional and Continuing Education. Adults enrolled in the evening degree program at the University of the Pacific Adult School have the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree in organizational behavior in 20 months. The school also offers customized corporate training and programs in project management, workforce education and substance abuse counseling.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Courses

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers a diverse array of classes for all adults, including seniors. Topics include book discussions, Tai Chi, drawing, watercolors, dealing with arthritis, and iPad and iPhone essentials.

Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program

This 16-credit hour program provides training in providing counseling to individuals suffering from substance abuse. Evening and weekend classes are available; online sections are offered as well. Participants learn skills in assessment, case management and crisis intervention. Working with both individuals and groups, students complete an internship of 300 hours, which exceeds the requirement for state certification.

Bachelor of Science in Organizational Behavior

This program, focusing on business and organizational skills, is designed to accommodate adults with full time jobs who wish to complete a bachelor's degree. Students have the choice of taking the course at night, twice a week, or they can complete half of their required coursework online and finish the rest each Saturday. Both options have a duration of eight weeks. Skills covered include critical thinking, writing, financial management, decision-making and leadership.
