There are several 4-year public and private universities in Oklahoma offering teaching training programs. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral education degrees are available. Areas of focus might include educational leadership or early childhood, elementary, gifted, mathematics and science, social studies or English education. Reading specialist, online teaching and educational administration graduate certificates also are available.


Cameron University

Lawton-based Cameron University offers bachelor's degrees in education in biology, early childhood, elementary, English, math, physical education, romance language education and social studies education. Each discipline has its own requirements, while all education students must complete supervised student teaching, create a portfolio and participate in field experiences. Cameron University also offers a Master of Education in Reading, a Master of Education in Education and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership.

East Central University

At Ada-based East Central University, aspiring teachers can pursue degree programs in early childhood education, elementary education, English education and special education for exceptional children. Each program has its own requirements, but there are a few courses and experiences common to all of these programs. Field experiences begin during the student's second semester, and student teaching takes place during the aspiring teacher's senior year.

Northeastern State University

Talequah's Northeastern State University offers Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) programs in concentrations like early childhood education, elementary education and English education. Each area of study has its own requirements, although common requirements include study of technology in education and internship preparation. At the graduate level, students can pursue certificates in reading specialist, writing program administration and school administration; available master's degree concentrations include early childhood education, teaching, science education and mathematics education.

Oklahoma City University

Students at Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City have a variety of options when it comes to undergraduate teacher education programs. Interested individuals can pursue a Bachelor of Science in multiple topics, including early childhood education, elementary education and secondary education. Each specialty has its own requirements, but education students can expect to complete introduction to teaching and foundations of reading courses as well as a semester of student teaching. The university also offers secondary certification in a variety of subjects, including English, math, science, social studies and speech/drama/debate. PK-12 certification is also available in French, German, Spanish, art and music education. All undergraduate education students must create a portfolio of their work. At the graduate level, students can pursue a Master of Education in American Montessori Society Early Childhood Education.

Oklahoma State University - Main Campus

At the Stillwater campus of Oklahoma State University, aspiring teachers at the undergraduate level can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education or Secondary Education. In the elementary education program, students take courses in teaching reading, language arts and primary math, learn about the role of the American teacher and complete two practicum sessions before assigned student teaching. In the secondary education option, aspiring teachers can choose from concentrations in social studies, science, English, math, foreign languages and art. All students are required to complete student teaching experiences and turn in a portfolio of their work. At the graduate level, students can pursue a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching, a Master of Science in Teaching, Learning and Leadership or a Doctor of Philosophy in Education.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University

Durant's Southeastern Oklahoma State University offers Bachelor of Science programs in early childhood education and special education mild/moderate disabilities. Common courses in these programs include foundations of literacy and teaching reading in the elementary school. The B.S. in Early Childhood Education requires completion of courses in social studies, language arts and mathematics methods, while the B.S. in Special Education requires courses in teaching strategies for students with cognitive or affective disorders, student assessment, and adaptive and assistive technology. Students in both programs must be proficient in a second language and must complete courses in professional education, including curriculum development and teaching strategies.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University

In the Department of Education at Weatherford-based Southwestern Oklahoma State University, students can choose from Bachelor of Science in Education programs in health and physical education, special education, elementary, early childhood and subject-specific courses for teaching secondary education. Each program has its own requirements; for example, the B.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Education requires courses in play methods and materials, teaching reading, nutrition for children, phonics and penmanship, while the B.S.Ed. in Health and Physical Education requires courses in technology as applied to gym, fitness and aquatics, motor learning, kinesiology and anatomy. At the graduate level, students can pursue a Master of Education in a variety of specializations, including mathematics, elementary or secondary education and kinesiology.

University of Central Oklahoma

Based in Edmond, the University of Central Oklahoma offers Bachelor of Science in Education programs in a variety of concentrations, including early childhood education, elementary education and special education with mild/moderate disabilities or severe, profound/multiple disabilities. At the graduate level, students can pursue a Master of Education (M.Ed) in Secondary Education or an Oklahoma Gifted Education Specialist Certification. In the M.Ed in Secondary Education program, students complete courses in educational research, educational sociology and a capstone research experience. Students choose a professional elective from a list including the principles of tests and measurements and educational statistics. A portfolio is required for graduation. The Oklahoma Gifted Education Specialist Certification is an online program requiring courses in foundations of gifted education, identification and assessment of gifted students, and a practicum in teaching education of gifted students.

University of Oklahoma -Norman

Norman's campus of the University of Oklahoma offers a variety of teacher education degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in instructional leadership and academic curriculum in a variety of education concentrations, such as English, early childhood, elementary, foreign languages, mathematics reading, secondary education, science or social studies. Master's and doctoral degrees are also available in the same eight concentrations. Master's level programs require that students complete courses in studies in teaching and learning, studies in cultural diversity and research in addition to concentration-specific courses. They can choose to complete a thesis or additional courses. Doctoral degree programs include 36 credit hours in the chosen concentration along with courses in curriculum theory. Doctoral students must complete and defend a dissertation.

University of Tulsa

Aspiring teachers at the University of Tulsa in Tulsa have undergraduate and graduate degree program options. At the undergraduate level, aspiring teachers can pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Education. In either, students can major in elementary education, math, biology, chemistry, geosciences or physics with a second major in education. All students complete courses in foundations of education, education of the exceptional child, and measurement and evaluation in education. All teacher education students at the undergraduate level must demonstrate proficiency in a second language. At the graduate level, students can pursue a Master of Arts in Education in Language Discourse and Development or Educational Foundations; a Master of Education in Secondary Education or Elementary Education; a Master of Science in Science and Mathematics Education; or a Master of Teaching Arts.

Career Requirements

In Oklahoma, a bachelor's degree is the minimum education required for certification in teaching. Aspiring teachers must pass the Oklahoma General Education Test, Oklahoma Subject Area Tests and the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Examination.
