North Carolina State University - Raleigh

North Carolina's largest 4-year postsecondary school is North Carolina State University (NCSU). The College of Education at NCSU - Raleigh is comprised of four academic departments that offer many undergraduate and graduate teacher-training programs. Students may specialize in areas such as elementary education, curriculum and instruction, adult and higher education and math and science education.

Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education

The degree program in elementary education admits 60 new students per year. Students take 27 credit hours of core courses in science and technology, including calculus, physics, chemistry, mathematics for teachers, science for teachers and a course in engineering or design. Students also take professional studies classes in mathematics, reading, science, engineering, social studies and the arts.

Master of Education

This degree program is for students with current teacher certification. Students take 30 credit hours, with at least 12 of these hours in core courses, including classes about diverse learners, number systems, scientific inquiry and literacy assessment. The student must also complete six credits of electives and nine credits of strand courses, which offer the student the opportunity to gain expertise in a particular academic field. Students may choose from available courses in literacy, mathematics, science, special education, teacher leadership and social studies.

Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education

Those seeking a Ph.D. in Science Education should enter the program with classroom teaching experience and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Doctoral candidates take courses in mathematics education and research methods and complete an internship or other field experience. Ph.D. students must also choose a minor and pass a succession of exams before writing and defending a dissertation.

North Carolina Central University

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is located in Durham, almost 30 miles from Raleigh. The school offers numerous undergraduate and graduate degrees in education and teacher training.

Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education

This bachelor's degree program includes classes in instructional technology, educational psychology, human growth and development, diversity, teaching children with special needs, instructional planning and assessment of learning. Other courses may include children's literature and classroom management. Students complete 21 credits in their academic concentration as well as various courses related to teaching specific subjects, including physical education, social studies, language arts, reading and mathematics.

Master of School Administration

This degree program is designed for students who have an education degree and are interested in moving into school administration. Students will develop educational leadership skills through 33 credit hours of coursework, along with 12 credit hours of field experience gained through an internship, along with a seminar program.

William Peace University

William Peace University is a private university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. It was founded in 1857 as a women's college under the name of Peace Institute. In 2009, the university became coeducational.

Bachelor of Arts in Education

This is 120-credit program consists of education courses, electives and general education courses. All education majors must take an orientation course for prospective teachers before advancing to the core courses. The core curriculum covers teaching methods for literacy, social studies, mathematics and science as well as courses in classroom management and teacher leadership. This program also includes a practicum and a student teaching assignment.

Located about 24 miles from Raleigh, this 4-year, private university offers bachelor of science degrees for teachers preparing for careers in early childhood education, elementary education, middle grades, secondary education and special education.
