Essential Information

Ultrasound technician courses are available as certificate courses, and they are also offered at the associate's and bachelor's degree levels. Students majoring in diagnostic medical sonography or ultrasound technician training get instruction in how to use ultrasound equipment. Courses prepare students to use diagnostic medical equipment, interact with patients, report to attending physicians and read diagnostic scans.

Here is a list of common concepts examined in ultrasound courses:

  • Sonography
  • Abdominal scanning
  • Imaging techniques
  • Vascular ultrasound technology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Obstetrics and gynecological sonography

List of Ultrasound Courses

Principles of Sonographic Imaging Course

Due to the nature of the work, ultrasound tech courses usually begin with a course in patient care. Prospective ultrasound technicians learn essential communication skills and examine the legal, ethical and psychological concerns that accompany professional sonography. Often, this course includes a study of the basic medical terminology used in sonography and an overview of common diagnostic imaging procedures, such as ultrasounds for developing fetuses and blood vessel imaging.

Human Anatomy Course

Ultrasound technician classes in anatomy include in-depth descriptions of bodily systems, along with how they work together to make the body function effectively. Students examine ultrasound images so they can identify body parts like livers, kidneys, developing brains and thyroids when they appear on screens or during x-rays. Sometimes, this course includes a clinical period, where students gain hands-on experience in the practical applications of studying physiology and anatomy. This course is usually taken in the first few semesters of a degree program.

Ultrasound Physics Course

Advanced ultrasound tech courses examine the physical science behind acoustic physics, usually with a focus on a particular branch of ultrasound work. Special topics in the ultrasound physics course include sound transmission, three-dimensional applications, diagnostic images and the workings of ultrasound technology. Students operate and maintain ultrasound machines and practice using them on classmates.

Clinical Practicum Course

A clinical practicum is usually completed near the end of an ultrasound tech program. Clinical classes typically take place in a hospital or doctor's office, where students have the opportunity to interact with patients, doctors and nurses to gain practical experience in the field. These clinical ultrasound courses provide students the opportunity to work in cardiac, vascular and general fields to understand how each uses diagnostic imaging practices. Students learn to monitor problems and health issues, such as blood clots, cancer and signs of stroke. Clinical work also involves tracking infant growth, which helps identify potential problems in early stages.
