Columbia University is a private institution in New York City. Founded in 1754, the university is of the oldest in the United States and is recognized as one of the finest schools in the world. Columbia is a member of the Ivy League, a group of eight colleges and universities renowned for academic excellence and civic leadership. The university is ranked 9th overall in the 2008 report of America's Best Colleges from U.S. News & World Report and features strong academic and research programs in medicine, law, engineering, journalism, architecture, business and the arts and humanities.
