Michigan Technological University, which is located in rural Houghton in the state's Upper Peninsula, is recognized as a premier engineering school and ranks #124 on the list of America's Best Colleges. Michigan Tech also ranks in the top #75 for its engineering department, while two of its programs, environmental and mechanical engineering, rank in the nation's top #25.

The university, which boasts one of the safest campuses in America, is highly ranked for its research and development expenditures. Michigan Tech has also created an innovative enterprise program which allows students to work in business-like environments on real-world projects while completing their education.

Students at Michigan Tech can earn certificates, associates, bachelors and doctorate degrees through the university's five schools and colleges. More than 60 percent of undergraduates major in engineering, making it by far the most popular major on campus. Pre-professional programs are also offered in law, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science, optometry and pharmacy.

Michigan Tech students participate in nearly 200 registered clubs and organizations, including student-run media, student government and an active Greek life. Student athletes also compete in the N.C.A.A. Division II.

Since Michigan Tech is 'more selective' in its admission process with an 82 percent acceptance rate, class sizes are generally small enough for the student-to-faculty ratio to be 12:1. Typical incoming freshmen carry a grade point average of 3.5 and ACT test scores are between 23 and 28.
