About Wake Technical Community College
Wake Technical Community College, a 2-year public college that operates 7 campuses in and around Raleigh, North Carolina, was established in 1963. It is now the largest community college in North Carolina with about 66,000 students, more than 19,000 of whom attend classes on the main campus. Wake Tech is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, as well as individual, programmatic accrediting agencies.
Wake Tech is part of the North Carolina Community College System. It hosts 180 degree, certificate, and diploma programs that are offered during the daytime and evening, as well as online. In 2012, the most popular less-than-1-year certificate program at the main campus in Raleigh was in accounting, while the most popular 1- to 2-year certificate program was in medical assisting. The liberal arts and sciences program awarded the most associate's degrees that year.
The major divisions of Wake Tech that offer non-credit, continuing education options include business and industry services, public safety training, education services and technology, biotechnology, and career readiness skills. The divisions that offer classes that award credits include applied engineering; arts, humanities, and social sciences; business and public services; computer technologies; health sciences; and mathematics and sciences. Credits earned in Wake Tech degree programs can be transferred to many 4-year colleges and universities.
Wake Tech has an open-door admission policy, which means anyone interested in this school can enroll. In 2012, 37% of students at the main campus attended the school on a full-time basis. Over half of those students were female. Additionally, 53% of the student population identified as Caucasian, and 23% identified as black or African American.
Individual programs have their own separate admissions procedures. Enrolling in the college does not guarantee admission to a particular program. General admissions procedure requires prospective students to submit an application, a high school transcript, and SAT or ACT scores (if taken). They must also complete any required placement exams, although these can be waived, depending on the student's SAT or ACT scores.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attending Wake Tech varies, depending on whether students are residents of North Carolina or not. Total costs range from about $18,000-$24,000 and include tuition, fees, books, supplies, and off-campus housing. Payment is due by July 15, July 30, or August 15, depending on when a student registers for classes. If a student registers on August 16 or after, payment is due on the same day he or she registers. Wake Tech also offers students a variety of financial aid options, including grants, federal loans, work-study programs, and scholarships.
