New Community Workforce Development Center's Adult Education Programs
The New Community Workforce Development Center is collaboration between the New Community Corporation and area institutions and agencies. The center, which is located about 23 minutes southeast of Wayne in Newark, offers programs that provide adult students with basic education and applicable job skills. Programs are offered in licensed practical nursing, automotive technology and the culinary arts.
Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program
The LPN program at New Community involves a combination of classroom instruction and clinical experience. The program is equivalent to 16 months of study, and is certified by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. Course topics include pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, obstetrics nursing and medical-surgical nursing. Graduates are prepared for the NCLEX-PN licensing examination.
Automotive Technology Program
Students in the 1200-hr automotive technology program gain a basic knowledge of automotive systems and technologies, such as brakes, electrical systems, heating and air systems and alignment. Those who successfully complete the program receive a maintenance and light repair certification from the Ford Motor Company.
Culinary Arts Program
The culinary arts program prepares students for careers with restaurants, hotels, cafeterias and catering companies. Students learn cooking techniques through classroom instruction and hands-on experience. Nutrition, food safety and cost control are also covered. Upon completion, students receive a certificate and food handler's license.
Bergen Community College's Adult Education Programs
Bergen Community College (BCC) is a 2-year public school located in Paramus, New Jersey, about 25 minutes east of Wayne. The school's Philip Ciarco Learning Center provides educational opportunities for adult students. English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are offered in addition to General Educational Development (GED) programs.
English as a Second Language Program
BCC offers 28 ESL courses. Students are tested and placed at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level. Additional courses in conversation, pronunciation and grammar are offered to advanced students. Classes are offered at several different times to fit with students' schedules.
General Educational Development Programs
Three courses are offered by BCC leading to the General Educational Development (GED) diploma. Students first take a basic academic skills course and then enroll in a test preparation course. A course for adults in need of further math practice before taking the GED exam is also offered.
William Paterson University of New Jersey
In addition to offering formal degree programs, the William Paterson University of New Jersey in Wayne has a continuing education and professional development department offering courses in a variety of fields, including technology, business and criminal justice. The department also provides workforce development training options.
Certified Financial Planner Certificate
Within this program, students can take courses in taxation, retirement and estate planning, among other topics. This program is designed to prepare students for professional certification.
Digital Graphic Design Certificate
Students pursuing this certificate will learn about software, tools and principles used in graphic and web design. Each module is 3-4 weeks long. This program offers introductory training in the field, so students don't need prior experience with design software.
Emergency Management Certificate
Students in this certificate program will learn about emergency management systems used by local, state and federal establishments. They will learn about the procedural developments for preventive and reactionary plans used before and after a crisis.
