This article offers details about ten colleges in Texas that offer welding training. Undergraduate certificates are available at many 2-year colleges. These programs may be offered at varying competency levels and may be available as general or specialized welding technology programs. Depending on the school, specialty certificates, often requiring completion of 4-5 courses, are offered in inert gas, shielded metal arc, plate and pipe welding. Associate degree programs are also available and combine practical training with studies in general education topics.
Austin Community College District
Austin Community College District, named after Austin, presents options for a welder qualification certification and an Associate of Applied Science in Code Welding. There are also certificates in pipe welding, plate welding and inert gas welding. Within these program options, students have the chance to learn about blueprint interpretation, blacksmithing, coppersmithing, art metals, metal sculpture and welding inspection.
A welding technology program is available in Brenham at Blinn College. The classes associated with this program are intended to help prepare students to enter into a welding profession after school. The courses are designed to have hands-on components to them. Flux core arc welding, gas metal arc welding, shield metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding are all welding processes that can be studied here.
Central Texas College
At Central Texas College in Killeen, the following major options are pursuable as a certificate: fitter, tacker, welder and welding technology. Welding majors can also earn an associate's degree. The welding technology certificate and the associate's degree program have similar core content. A student in either of these programs would become educated about pipe welding, GMAW welding, SMAW welding, oxy-fuel welding, layout and fabrication and blueprint reading. The other certificate options here have several of the same classes in them.
Del Mar College
In the area of Corpus Christi, students can pursue intermediate or advanced welding certification as well as an associate's degree in welding applied technology at Del Mar College. The intermediate option is 24 credits and takes several semesters to complete. The advanced option consists of the same curriculum found in the intermediate certificate with an added 24 credits in topics like layout and fabrication, blueprint reading, gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding. The associate's degree program has the same coursework as the advanced welding certification program, except that students in the associate's degree program also have to take general education classes.
Located in Mesquite, students at Eastfield College have the opportunity to earn a certificate in shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding. Each of these programs are level I certificates. The 4 classes in each program add up a total of 16 credits. Additionally, each certificate covers introduction, intermediate and advanced levels of the specific welding technique for that program. There is also a welding qualifications course in each program.
Houston Community College
Houston Community College offers students in Houston programs for an advanced welding certificate and a basic welding helper certificate. In a single semester, students can complete the basic welding program by studying industrial mathematics, workforce development, multiple process welding, blueprint reading and welding fundamentals. The advanced program option requires students to take those same classes, but to also spend several additional semesters learning about pipe welding, TIG welding and MIG welding.
Lone Star College System
Certificates for pipe welding, layout and fabrication welding, gas tungsten arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding are all obtainable at Lone Star College System in The Woodlands. Most of these certificate programs are 16 credits in length with 4 classes that have to be taken in them. Students wanting an associate's degree also have that option as welding technology majors. This program is typically 70 to 71 credits and there is an option to specialize in inspection technology.
San Jacinto Community College
Found in Pasadena, San Jacinto Community College allows students to enroll in certificate programs for shielded gas arc welding, art welding, structural welding and stick pipe welding. There is also an associate's degree program in welding technology here. The art welding option isn't intended for students who're looking to enter into welding as profession. Instead, this option is pursued by students interested in creating metal art items through welding. The other welding programs here are more appropriate for students who want to become professional welders as the courses here can educate students on shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and gas metal arc welding.
South Texas College
Students in McAllen can find a combination welding certificate and a structural welding certificate at South Texas College as well as an associate's degree in welding technology. Among these options, there are numerous welding classes to choose from. For example, there is an introduction course that goes over equipment, tools and safety procedures related to welding. From there, the rest of the coursework at this school covers the following: blueprint reading, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, layout and fabrication, flux cored arc welding and pipe welding.
Tarrant County College District
Tarrant County College District is in Fort Worth and has a basic welding certificate and an advanced welding certificate in addition to an Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technology degree program. The basic certificate program is 5 courses while the advanced certificate program is 4 classes. The associate's degree option is a 2-year program that requires students to finish general education courses along with 11 welding classes.
