Essential Information

The state of Georgia is home to a good number of schools that offer classes and/or programs in welding. Students interested in the field may earn a certificate or a diploma in welding or a sub-field of the discipline; individual courses are also available at some schools. Many programs build upon established skill sets; students must possess basic welding abilities before moving on to more specialized divisions. By nature, classes concentrate on the safe development of hands-on skills with tools and equipment pertinent to welding.

Presented below are profiles for the nine largest schools in Georgia offering welding classes.


Albany Technical College

A welding and joining technology diploma can be earned at Albany Technical College in Albany. This is a 50 credit program that requires students to first take foundational classes on interpersonal relations, mathematics and English. From there, students can delve into coursework on the different forms of welding including plasma cutting, horizontal shielded metal arc welding, flat shielded metal arc welding and overhead shielded metal arc welding. There are also courses on ornamental iron works, fabrication processes and blueprint reading. Students who just want a welding certificate have many options to pick from here. Students can select one of the following welding majors as a certificate: advanced shield metal arc welding, basic shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, vertical shielded metal arc welding fabrication and pipe welding.

Athens Technical College

Students in Athens can take several welding classes at Athens Technical College. In an introductory welding course, students are educated on welding codes and standards, industrial safety and the use of power machines and hand tools. Students who want to learn automatic and manual oxy-fuel cutting techniques can enroll in the oxy-fuel cutting class. There are also automotive welding classes in the automotive collision repair diploma program.

Central Georgia Technical College

Central Georgia Technical College is in Macon and has numerous welding certificate options. Students can earn a certificate in pipe welding, gas metal arc welding, basic shielded metal arc welding, advanced shield metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and vertical shielded metal arc welding fabrication. Students who want a program that encompasses many different forms of welding can enroll in the diploma program for welding and joining technology majors. Oxy-fuel cutting, industrial qualification preparation and advanced gas tungsten arc welding are just a few of the classes in the diploma program.

Chattahoochee Technical College

Students who complete the welding and joining technology program in Marietta at Chattahoochee Technical College can earn a diploma. At the Appalachian campus, students start off by taking classes on welding technology, mathematics, professional development, English and computers. From there, the program advances to covering issues on gas tungsten arc welding and gas metal arc welding. Finally, once students reach the electives, there is a choice of learning about plasma cutting, pipe welding, fabrication processes or metal cutting and welding techniques.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College

Georgia Northwestern Technical College offers students in Rome the option to pursue certificate programs in basic shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, advanced shielded metal arc welding and vertical shielded metal arc welding fabrication. At the Floyd, Walker and Whitfield Murray campuses, a welding and joining technology diploma program is available. This program can be entered during the fall and spring semesters. Professional, technical and academic information on welding are all covered in this program. Students learn practical and theoretical welding skills in classes on industrial qualifications, blue print reading, metal arc welding and oxy-fuel cutting.

Gwinnett Technical College

In the area of Lawrenceville, there is a welding and joining technology diploma program at Gwinnett Technical College. With the right preparation and coordination, the program can be completed in 3 semesters. The program starts off with introduction courses on welding technology and computers. After the 3 required general classes, students can move onto learning about vertical, horizontal, overhead and flat shielded metal arc welding. In addition to the diploma program, there are certificate programs in flux cored arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and advanced shielded metal arc welding.

Savannah Technical College

In Savannah, students can earn certificates in gas tungsten arc welding, flux cored arc welding and gas metal arc welding at Savannah Technical College. There are also certificate programs available in basic shielded metal arc welding and advanced shielded metal arc welding. An alternative welding educational option here is the diploma program in welding and joining technology. A GED or a high school diploma is not necessary to enter into this program, although students have to be at least 16 years of age. The topics in the core coursework of this program are on blueprint reading, vertical shielded metal arc welding, computers and welding technology.

Southern Crescent Technical College

The curriculum at Southern Crescent Technical College in Griffin for the welding and joining technology diploma program is roughly 49 to 51 credit hours. The program dedicates 8 credit hours to basic skill classes, 39 credit hours to the core major requirements and the rest of the program's hours to electives. A student can choose from the following electives: metal welding and cutting techniques, pipe welding, plasma cutting, ornamental iron works, fabrication processes, flux core arc welding and advanced gas tungsten arc welding. Gas tungsten arc welding, vertical shielded metal arc welding fabrication, gas metal arc welding and basic shielded metal arc welding are all topics that can be pursued as individual majors that result in a certificate.

West Georgia Technical College

Certificates for pipe welders, basic shielded metal arc welders, advanced shielded metal arc welders, gas metal arc welders and gas tungsten arc welders can be earned at West Georgia Technical College in Waco. If students are willing to take at least 50 credit hours worth of courses, then the welding and joining technology diploma program can be earned at this school. Students who complete the welding and joining technology diploma program qualify to take the certification examinations issued by the American Welding Society. The diploma program covers the practical and theoretical applications of welding technology.
