Essential Information

Although there are over 75 public and private not-for-profit schools in the state of Indiana, there are only a few of them that offer welding classes. Students may choose to earn a certificate or an associate's degree in the field, or complete a training program that does not end in an award. Many programs introduce students to a range of different welding techniques. Students will have access to equipment and materials necessary and be instructed in necessary safety procedures.

Ball State University

There are several welding classes at Ball State University in Muncie as part of the associate's degree program in mechanical engineering technology. Materials and processes is a course that goes over joining, casting and welding processes. This involves learning about molding, cores, melting, cleaning and patterns. The welding methods students are educated on include MIG, TIG, gas and arc welding. Welding and foundry is another available class at this school. Students get familiar with oxyacetylene and electric welding equipment in this class.

Ivy Tech Community College

With a main campus in Indianapolis, Ivy Tech Community College offers welding courses in a variety of different programs. An accelerated option is available in this school's welding program. This is a 4-term program where students can be educated on OFC, OFW, FCAW, MIG, TIG and stick welding skills. Another welding program here is a certificate in structural welding. This is an 18 credit program. Welding classes can also be taken as a part of the industrial technology major that can be pursued as part of an associate's degree program or a certificate program.

J Everett Light Career Center

GTAW and GMAW welding classes can be taken in Indianapolis at the J Everett Light Career Center. Welding students here attend courses at night. It is required that students provide their own protective clothing. Students in this program learn about welding processes involving aluminum, solid core wire, carbon steel and stainless steel.

Vincennes University

With 73 credit hours of work, students can graduate with an associate's degree in welding technology at Vincennes University in Vincennes. In the first couple of semesters of this program, students take coursework on shielded metal arc welding, manufacturing processes, oxy-acetylene welding, gas metal arc welding, drafting and blueprint reading. In the last half of the program, the curriculum requires students to be educated about weld fabrication, welding automation and welding inspection. Students who're just interested in a certificate program can find a 9 month program here. Students in this certificate program have to spend 20 hours each week in a laboratory setting receiving hands-on welding experience.
