Los Angeles Trade Technical College
Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC) is part of the Los Angeles Community College District, which is the country's largest community college district. LATTC is a Certified Welding Test Center; students in the welding program can complete certification exams right at the school.
Certificate of Achievement in Welding Gas and Electric
A minimum of 24 units have to be completed to earn this certificate. Students are required to take several gas and electric welding courses, in addition to tungsten inert-gas welding classes. The rest of the program is made up of several technical classes on welding, as well as courses in blueprint reading and applied mathematics.
Associate of Science in Welding Gas and Electric
Students who aren't interested in taking general education classes can pursue a Certificate of Achievement instead of an associate's degree in this program. Requirements for the welding gas and electric major include applied mathematics, blueprint reading, electric welding, acetylene cutting, brazing and welding. There is also a class on inert-gas welding.
El Camino College
El Camino College offers courses and certificate and associate's degree programs in welding. A graduation-with-honors option is available to students who maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher. Courses can be taken during the day or in the evening.
Certificate of Achievement in Welding
Students pursuing a certificate in welding at El Camino College may choose to complete a 32-unit program or a 44-unit program. Students in the 44-unit program take additional classes in technical mathematics, mechanical drafting and general metals. Welding classes available to students include welding processes, basic welding technology, structural fabrication and blueprint reading.
Associate in Science in Welding
In this 60-unit program, students complete coursework similar to the welding certificate program, in addition to general education classes. Welding courses include arc welding certification, gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.
Cerritos College offers courses and a certificate program in welding. Faculty and staff are experienced welders, and some are certified welding inspectors. Students may take courses to become certified and licensed by the city of Los Angeles and the state of California.
Certificate of Achievement in Welding
The basic core classes in welding at this school consist of the following: welding blueprint reading, beginning arc welding and welding shop math. There are also courses on safety and the welding environment, as well as welding fundamentals. Students can specialize in arc welding, pipe welding, welding fabrication and layout or gas tungsten arc welding. The rest of a student's coursework varies based on which specialization is chosen.
Pasadena City College is about 12 miles from downtown Los Angeles and has several welding certificate programs. Another school option is located about 22.9 miles from downtown Los Angeles at Long Beach City College, which offers a welding technology program.
