Essential Information

Design degree programs are commonly offered by school's art and design department and are often available as Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) programs. Some fields of study include graphic design, industrial design, interior design, multimedia design, Web design and media design. Students usually gain an understanding of the history and design principles of their chosen concentration and then get hands-on practice through studio courses. Training in design software is typically included in these programs as well.


University of Wisconsin - Stout

Located in Menomonie, the University of Wisconsin - Stout offers BFA programs through the Department of Art and Design. Students can choose from concentrations in graphic, industrial, multimedia or interior design. All programs include design labs where artists can experiment.

The graphic design program includes courses in drawing, 2- and 3-dimensional design, letter forms and advanced graphic design methods. Students in the industrial design program take classes focusing on human interaction within the physical environment and proficiency with materials, manufacturing processes and design software.

Interior design students take courses in general interior design, environmental interior design, lighting design, textiles, architectural drafting and interior specifications. Those studying multimedia design take courses that focus on digital, interactive and multimedia Web design; photography; digital audio and video production; computer science and Web programming.

Wisconsin Lutheran College

Wisconsin Lutheran College, located in Milwaukee, is a small private Christian school that offers 29 majors and six pre-professional courses of study.
